Parking Operations grace period ends Monday

For IU students parking at "D" spots on campus without a valid permit, the grace period ends Monday at 7 a.m. With students moving into residence halls, and families flooding Blooimgton to send off their sons and daughters, Doug Porter, parking operations manager, said IU Parking Operations is not enforcing these zones today and this weekend. But come Monday morning, as the start of school nears, Porter warned that only cars with valid permits should park in "D" spots.

Connecting former students around the globe

·

From Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, to Sun City, Ariz., and everywhere in between, the IU Alumni Association connects former students worldwide. John Hobson, IU Alumni Association senior vice president, said more than 100 IU alumni clubs exist worldwide. About 100,000 members currently belong to the association -- a large percentage of the 454,000 living alumni, he said. "It's among the five largest alumni associations in the United States. It serves graduates of all eight campuses," Hobson said.

Team to rely on new chemistry

·

Nine underclassmen are not going to keep the 2001 volleyball team from being successful and having great chemistry. "This year is actually like a repeat of last year with so many underclassmen, but we are more experienced," Coach Katie Weismiller said. "We have five of six returning starters, and when you look at us on the court, we look like we've aged. We truly look much more mature than we were a year ago." Weismiller also believes the team is much more physical.

Team heads to Ft. Wayne

·

Not many programs in college sports are as successful as IU men's soccer. Head coach Jerry Yeagley has taken the Hoosiers to the College Cup 14 times in 28 seasons and has led them to five national championships. They consistently rank in the top five in the country and have produced some of the most talented athletes in the sport.

Kicking us while we were down

·

Beta Theta, see you later. Fraternity opponents were probably jumping for joy after hearing that yet another fraternity was removed from IU. It seemed imminent. Now that I am considered an alumni member of Beta Theta Pi, I feel a bit confused. I don't know how such an organization could be there one day, gone the next. On July 27, at 2 a.m., there was a vote to disband the chapter 72-20. This group of 92 strapping young Men of Principle were comprised mostly of presidents at other Beta fraternities. Now I cannot argue with the facts. We had 30 incidents in the Pi Chapter file, four open risk management cases and one lawsuit. But I can wonder how a committee made up of mostly people our age would want to force us off of campus. I cannot understand it, even by putting myself into their shoes.

The evil that is golf

·

At first glance, golf seems like an easy and relaxing sport. But a closer look rips off golf's cloak of happy fun fun to reveal a sinister, sadistic game possibly invented by Genghis Khan to torture his enemies.

I still know what I did last summer

·

Back in the hallowed days of grade school, it was not uncommon to begin the year with an essay explaining in detail the various events that made up your summer. Fortunately, now that we are in college, this is not an english class requirement. I say fortunately because in the words of my good friend Klaus Von Utenduten, summer is that "three month hole where something must have happened… but I just can't put my finger on it."

Basic instincts

·

When I graduated from IU two years ago, I planned to use my fresh Master of Library Science for a couple of years and then return to graduate school. I imagined myself honing the skills I acquired in my time at School of Library and Information Science, and returning triumphantly to graduate school confident that I could survive and even thrive in the "real world." What is it they say about the best laid plans of mice and men? The past two years have been quite a learning experience for me. Unfortunately, not the learning experience I wanted. There were times when I wondered if I would come through this learning experience at all, let alone with my sanity intact.

Residency issue needs solution

The law is clear. Two of the IU trustees -- not including the student trustee -- can live in the same county. No more. Stephen Ferguson, an appointed trustee, lives in Monroe County. Fred Eichhorn, an IU trustee appointed by the governor, moved from Lake County to Monroe County in February. In June, Sue Talbot, another Monroe County resident, was elected to the board of trustees by alumni.

Campus packed as freshmen move in dorms

As the sounds of Dave Matthews Band blared loudly from a window on an upper floor of Read Center, cars and vans loaded with clothes, cleaning supplies, storage boxes and posters pulled into the circle drive around the side of the building.

Promoting a diverse campus

·

Henna tattoos, Asian cuisine and opportunities to explore majors await incoming freshmen today as part of the Office of Orientation Programs' Welcome Week. Today's events include CultureFest, a celebration of cultural diversity on the IU campus, and the College of Arts and Sciences Freshman Reception and Expo.

Cultivating a campus full of green

·

Every day thousands of students, faculty and visitors walk, run, bike and even stroll through the IU campus. Rich with tradition and aesthetic beauty, IU\'s campus has been critically acclaimed for decades. In 1991 Thomas Gaines compiled a list of 100 campuses and evaluated them for urban space, the quality of architecture, landscaping and overall visual and physical appeal. IU was fifth on the list only after Stanford, Princeton, Wellsley and Colorado universities.

The meaning of life, a.k.a. infomercials

·

Wonder and amazement. Two emotions that as a child are frequently felt as one encounters a new thing every time they turn the corner practically. Yet, by the time you reach college, as we all have, including all you cute little froshies out there starting your first week of classes, these two emotions are few and far between, as a person starts to have a "been there, done that" attitude. Of course, there is always that wonder you feel during that first keg stand that you do, though its probably a wonder of how you can consume that much alcohol in so little time.

Coming back to IU

·

Every year in May, after exams are over and I find myself back home, I can't help but wonder what will change during summer. Will I be different when I return in August? Will my friends change? What will change? It's only three months, but it seems like forever. And every year, I come to the same conclusion: the only thing that doesn't change is the campus of Indiana University.

Event cultivates multiculturalism

Indiana has not always been the center of cultural tolerance and diversity. The Ku Klux Klan was started in a small town in northern Indiana many years ago. Two years ago this past summer, a Korean graduate student was killed in Bloomington by a member of a hate group. Since this incident, the Bloomington community both on and off-campus have pulled together to celebrate the diverse group of people that make up the town and college community. People have worked hard to make Bloomington a place where all people feel safe and welcome.

Hoosiers optimistic -- again

·

Six offense players, four defenders and one head coach showed up for IU football media day last week. One could argue the 11 flashed more grins, showed more teeth and cracked more jokes than any other team attempting to bounce back from a disappointing 3-8 season and four consecutive campaigns of less than four wins. But optimism isn't hard to come by around IU's camp. And while expectations hinge on whether or not Tommy Jones can step in at quarterback, how well the defense can stop opposing attacks and how dangerous Antwaan Randle El will be at receiver, Cameron insists the door to a winning season can easily be flung open. "This is the best leadership we've had," Cameron said a day before his troops departed for training camp in Marshall, Ind. "We're close. We're piecing things together."
