Haverly earns third weekly freshman award

For the third time this volleyball season, IU freshman outside hitter Jordan Haverly is the Big Ten Freshman of the Week. Haverly earned her third such accolade of 2009 for her efforts in the Hoosiers' weekend sweep of Wisconsin and Iowa to finish the season.

Hoosiers fall to UNC, eliminated from NCAAs

The up-and-down season came to a halt for the IU men's soccer team Sunday when it fell 1-0 to No. 5 seed North Carolina in the third round of the NCAA Tournament. The Tar Heels' lone goal came 27 minutes into the game when sophomore forward Alex Dixon slid a ball past freshman goalkeeper Luis Soffner to the opposite post. It was the only goal IU gave up during its three-game postseason run. IU finished the year at 12-10-1, winning two games against ranked opponents to reach the Chapel Hill, N.C.

Cox breaks dig record as Hoosiers sweep Iowa

The IU volleyball team concluded its final weekend of the season by breaking school records and sweeping Iowa Saturday. Sophomore libero Caitlin Cox posted 16 digs to increase her season total to 488, the most ever by an IU player in a single season, as the Hoosiers (17-17, 6-14) ended their up-and-down year by dominating the Hawkeyes (13-20, 5-15) by scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-20. "It feels nice," Cox said of breaking the record previously held by Juli Pierce (481 digs in 2007). "I kind of had an idea that I was close, but I wasn't sure if I would make it this season or not.

Hoosiers beat Wisconsin 3-2

The IU volleyball team avenged its Oct. 18 five-set loss to Wisconsin in University Gym with a five-set victory in Madison Friday. The Hoosiers (16-17, 5-14) accumulated seven service aces and 31 block assists to beat the Badgers (11-17, 6-13) by scores of 22-25, 25-21, 25-15, 23-25 and 15-12. Freshman outside hitter Jordan Haverly led IU's offensive attack with 22 kills, and junior middle blocker added 18 while hitting at a team-best .368 clip. Benson also had three of the team's seven service aces, with freshman defensive specialist Laura Matula adding two and Haverly and sophomore libero Caitlin Cox recording one each. The Hoosiers also produced heavily at the net.

IU women beat Charlotte

Postgame: The Hoosiers pulled away and led by double digits most of the second half and won 72-61. IU improves to 4-2 on the year with the win. Jamie Braun led the way with 24 points, making five of seven three pointers, while Jori Davis added 21.

IU commit Perez named ESPNChicago.com POY

Just when the Hoosiers started thinking they had a secret steal in their recruiting class, running back Matt Perez continues to earn praise from the media. Already being named Illinois' best high school player by the Chicago Sun-Times, the Maine South senior has hit the national scene as espnchicago.com, the sports-media giant's local spin site, named Perez the High School Player of the Year. IU field hockey earn post-season awards

Three Indiana field hockey players were named to the 2009 Longstreth/NFHCA West All-Region first and second teams. Sophomore forward Corey Brautigam earned first-team honors. Brautigam was also named a third team All-American by Longstreth/NFHCA. While freshman forward Morgan Fleetwood and senior midfielder Meg O'Connell earned second-team honors. Fleetwood also earned all-Rookie team honors from womensfieldhockey.com. Brautigam started 20 of 21 games for the Hoosiers and scored five goals and tallied two assists. O'Connell scored four goals to go along with six assists for 14 points. Fleetwood led the Hoosiers with 15 goals and tallied six assists The Hoosiers (14-7) ended the 2009 season ranked 13th in the NFHCA Coaches poll and was a first-round NCAA tournament participant..

Doss, Kirlew and Saffold earn All-Big Ten honors

Just a few days removed from the finish to a 4-8 season, some players on the IU football team are being recognized by their conference for a great year. Via the IU Athletics Department: Sophomore wide receiver Tandon Doss, fifth-year defensive end Jammie Kirlew and senior left tackle Rodger Saffold earned All-Big Ten honors, the conference announced Monday evening.

Hoosiers take down Butler 1-0

For the second straight game, the IU men's soccer team was able to avenge a regular season loss when it defeated Butler 1-0 Sunday and advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament.
