Although the Hoosiers' season ended on sour note against Purdue on Saturday, there is some offseason business to attend to. First off, naming the team MVP.
For the second consecutive year, that honor goes to defensive end Jammie Kirlew.
This from IU Athletics:
Indiana fifth-year senior defensive end Jammie Kirlew earned the 2009 Anthony Thompson MVP Award, head coach Bill Lynch announced at the team banquet on Sunday afternoon at the Henke Hall of Champions. Lynch also recognized the team's 21 seniors, captains Will Patterson, Jammie Kirlew, Rodger Saffold and Ben Chappell, and handed out 13 additional season-ending awards.Kirlew, who also was named IU's most valuable player last year, finished the season in the top 10 in the Big Ten in four major statistical categories. The Orlando native was sixth in the league and 23rd nationally with 15.5 tackles for loss, tied for sixth in the conference with 6.5 sacks, third in the Big Ten and ninth nationally with five forced fumbles and shared third in the Big Ten and 29th nationally with two fumble recoveries.
He closed out his career tied for third on the Hoosiers' career sacks list with 23 and second on the career tackles for lost list with 52.5. Kirlew was also selected to the Ted Hendricks Defensive End of the Year Award Watch List, the Chuck Bednarik Award Watch List and the Rotary Lombardi Award Watch List in addition to being named a first team All-Big Ten selection by Lindy's preseason magazine and Sporting News and preseason All-Big Ten by Athlon Sports. Lindy's also rated him the eighth-best defensive end in the country.
Kirlew had at least one sack in six games and at least one TFL in 10 contests this season. In Big Ten games only, Kirlew tied for second with four forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He finished fifth on the team with 62 tackles and third with 49 solo stops.
