Before you watch the video, here's a short article about IU senior Ben Heisler participating in a national Dick Vitale impersonation contest. But the real reason for the post (I'm not a big fan of linking my own articles) is to give a link to Heisler's original video submission that earned him a spot in the finals. Check it out here.
Covering recruiting last year and the prior spring semester and summer, I had a number of interviews with the Class of 2009 recruits (though I never had more than a text conversation with Bawa during the signing period). When I asked each of the players about their individual and team goals, everyone gave the typical answers - win a national title, win conference championships, get better, etc. I distinctly remember what Christian Watford told me when I wrote a feature story on him a year ago, so I decided to find the actual quote.
Seeing as these lists differed so much I added the media choices as well. The media does not choose a defensive player of the year or sixth man of the year. Evan Turner was a lock among coaches and members of the news media as player of the year. PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Evan Turner, Ohio State DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE YEAR: Chris Kramer, Purdue SIXTH MAN OF THE YEAR: DRAYMOND GREEN, Michigan State FRESHMAN OF THE YEAR: D.J.
This the coaches list, since the media version is void of any All-Freshman or All-Defensive teams. HONORABLE MENTION Mike Tisdale, Illinois Verdell Jones III, Indiana Aaron Fuller, Iowa Matt Gatens, Iowa Lawrence Westbrook, Minnesota Michael Thompson, Northwestern Jon Diebler, Ohio State David Lighty, Ohio State Chris Kramer, Purdue Jon Leuer, Wisconsin ALL-FRESHMAN TEAM D.J.
I'm only posting the All-Big Ten conference team as chosen by the coaches. The media's version doesn't deviate much from this original list.
Just to clear the air, no IU players were included on the first three teams listing the conference's best players. But three Hoosiers were honored. Verdell Jones, Christian Watford and Brett Finkelmeier were all on the All-Big Ten Men's Basketball team. Many thought sophomore guard Verdell Jones could have made one of the three teams.
This is the true post of Little 500 riders picked to have their lives surrounding America's Greatest College Weekend posted to the web.
In a preliminary call, I was told by former IU assistant coach Roshown McLeod that I could speak with him at 4p.m.
The Hoosiers (6-10) have won one game this weekend in the DeMarini Invitational in Fullerton, CA. On Friday, IU lost to the Pacific Tigers 2-0. California native freshman infielder Breanna Saucedo went two for three and had the only two hits for the Hoosiers in the game. Then, IU lost 7-5 to North Carolina in the second game of the day. Junior catcher Cassie Gogreve went one for three with a three run homer in the fifth inning. Also, freshman outfielder Samantha Heyman hit two for four with two RBI's and a run. The Hoosiers lost Saturday's first game against UC Davis 4-2. Junior pitcher Sara Olson went two for three with an RBI in the game. IU won its first game of the invitational 4-1 against home-field advantaged Cal State Fullerton. Olson (3-4) had a complete game with only five hits from the opposed Titans. To close the weekend, IU lost to No.
IU coach Tom Crean spoke about the firing of assistant coach Roshown McLeod this morning on the Big Ten teleconference. Here's a quote from his the question he answered from the Herald-Times' Dustin Dopirak: "There's probably never a good time.
Demetri McCamey: Illinois The former backcourt mate of Turner's at St. Joseph's High School in Illinois, junior point guard Demetri McCamey has made a name for himself this season. He has hit big shots for the Illini, most notably with tenths of a second left for 72-70 win against IU on Jan.
An IU media relations press release sent out Sunday said that IU has no intention of renewing the contract of assistant coach Roshown McLeod and will let him go immediately. Crean spoke about the need for IU to make moves at Saturday's press conference. There was no way to tell what he meant at the time. Here's the comment released on his part. "There is never a good time for something like this, but it is a decision that had to be made moving forward," said Crean. The quote speaks of inconvenience, but says little about the reasoning behind McLeod firing. McLeod was in his second year with IU.
With Michigan State's victory against Michigan on Sunday afternoon, the Wolverines locked themselves in as the No.
Evan Turner: Ohio State Perhaps the best player in the nation, Ohio State junior guard Evan Turner might pose as the single largest factor in this tournament. The No.6 Buckeyes earned a solo championship for the Big Ten regular season and are the favorites to take home the tournament title as well because of his play. Turner averages 19 points, nine rebounds, five assists and a steal per game. His team is full of athletic guards who can dribble, drive and shoot, yet Turner's play is the basis of its success. Only seven players deep, the Buckeyes will need Turner to continue to play 36 minutes, handle the ball and make their game's defining plays.
Some of the biggest names in Big Ten women's basketball will be on display in the conference's championship game between top-seeded Ohio State and third-seeded Iowa today at 4:30 p.m.
IU coach Tom Crean on playing four freshmen and one sophomore: "I didn't second guess it. We moved things around - we had Verdell at the point to start the game, we had Christian at the small forward spot to start the game.
After the Hoosiers beat Northwestern 88-80 in OT, it was time to start Senior Day celebrations. Four stands held framed jerseys of the four seniors who each had a different journey before - and during - their time at IU.
While the IU women's basketball team nearly came back and won their game against Illinois in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament Thursday, the reason the Hoosiers couldn't beat the Fighting Illini again was quite simple. Illinois had an answer for IU's top players.
The Hoosiers (6-9) have won one game through four games in the DeMarini Invitational in Fullerton, CA. On Friday, IU lost to the Pacific Tigers 2-0. California native freshman infielder Breanna Saucedo went two for three and had the only two hits for the Hoosiers in the game. Then, IU lost 7-5 to North Carolina in the second game of the day. IU won its first game of the invitational 4-1 against home-field advantaged Cal State Fullerton. Olson (3-4) had a complete game with only five hits from the opposed Titans. The Hoosiers last game of the Invitational comes against No.
