Barack Obama to visit Indianapolis Wednesday

October 4, 2008 at 11:20 am by Benjamin Phelps

Just one hour ago “Barack Obama” sent me an e-mail announcing he will have a rally in Indianapolis this Wednesday, Oct. 8.

The rally will be at the Indiana State Fairgrounds, 1202 E. 38th St. in Indianapolis. Gates open at 10 a.m. and the event is scheduled to start at 12:15 p.m.

The event is free, but tickets are required. To RSVP for the event, click here and fill out the information.

Interestingly, Obama will speak just hours after the second presidential debate at 9 p.m. Tuesday night in Nashville. He and McCain will hold a joint town-hall type of meeting.

His appearance will be two weeks after Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden spoke in Jeffersonville, which is just outside of Louisville. Obama also visited Terre Haute earlier this summer.

But don’t fret John McCain backers, rumors have it that the Arizona senator will be spending more time and money in Indiana to thwart Democratic attempts to take the state in November. He started airing advertisements in Indiana last week and I wouldn’t be surprised if McCain makes a stop in the Hoosier state sometime in the next two weeks.

Biden visits, GOP makes first bid to Indiana voters

September 26, 2008 at 8:19 pm by Benjamin Phelps

Yes I know, this is late, but after I went to French Lick to cover the Gubernatorial candidates and then went to Jeffersonville to see Democratic vice-presidential nominee Joe Biden, I needed some recovery time.

You can read the story here as well as find photographer Brandon Foltz’ slideshow here. Make sure to check out Brandon’s work; he got some great shots of Delaware’s senior senator. Brandon was actually one of two photographers pulled out of the media to follow Biden’s walk up through the crowd and up to the stage.

Interesting to note was that some Democratic candidates in Indiana weren’t at the speech. Baron Hill of Indiana’s 9th Congressional District, which includes Jeffersonville, wasn’t there and neither was Jill Long Thompson, who is running for governor.

This is one of several stops the Obama-Biden campaign has made in Indiana, including Barack in Terre Haute and Michelle in Fishers.

I was just talking with some other election reporters and editors earlier about how the Democrats have vastly out-spent the Republicans in this state. So I was very surprised a few minutes ago when I saw this story from on MSNBC about how the GOP is planning to air ads in several new states, including Indiana. This one from WISH-TV says it’s only the second time a GOP presidential candidate spent money in Indiana, other than 1996.

Not sure if this is a sign of more things to come from the Republicans, or if the Democrats will continue to outdo them in money and political capital spent in this state. Of course, the Democrats have a tough job in turning Indiana blue, and they may regret spending money in what is usually a solidly red state when some of Indiana’s neighbors, like Ohio and Michigan, are completely up for grabs.

Biden stumping in Jeffersonville Wednesday

September 22, 2008 at 8:41 pm by Benjamin Phelps

The rumors of Delaware Sen. Joe Biden’s appearance in Indiana has been confirmed.

The Democratic vice-presidential nominee will appear at Warder Park in Jeffersonville, which is just across the Ohio River from Louisville, Ken.

Joe Biden

The press release didn’t have a start time to the event, but it did say the doors will open at 2:30 p.m., so who knows what time Biden will eventually take the stage.

The event is free, but of course tickets are required and no doubt will probably go quickly, especially in the Democratic stronghold that is Clark County.

It looks like the only way to get tickets is to go to one of the two ticket distribution centers in Jeffersonville and New Albany.

Here are the locations and hours: Campaign for Change - Jeffersonville Office, 335 Spring St., Suite A, Jeffersonville, IN 47130 (812-282-6291). Tickets will be available: Monday, September 22nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, September 23rd, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Campaign for Change - New Albany Office, 404 E. Main St., New Albany, IN 47150 (812-944-4730). Tickets will be available: Monday, September 22nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Tuesday, September 23rd, from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

I’ll post again whenever I have more information on the talk, such as when it is scheduled to start.

John Edwards comes out in support of Obama

May 14, 2008 at 7:33 pm by Michael Zennie

Former Vice Presidential candidate John Edwards broke his long silence in the Democratic presidential race tonight. Since he dropped out in January, Edwards has held his tongue as to which candidate he supports.

Tonight, he showed up on stage in Grand Rapids, Mich., with Obama.

Read more about it here.

Of special note is that Edwards will be adding 19 delegates he earned in the first weeks of the race to Obama’s total.

Hillary declares victory in West Virginia

May 13, 2008 at 9:31 pm by Michael Zennie

No surprise here, but Hillary Clinton is declaring victory in the West Virginia primary. Right now, the margin looks to be about 63-to-30-percent. Check out results here.

Polls and even Obama himself had long predicted a blowout for Clinton in this state. Polls showed Clinton ahead by as much as 36 percentage points.

This is, nonetheless, a small win. West Virginia is the 37th largest state and has only 39 delegates - not enough make up for the 163-delegate lead that Obama has developed.

Clinton is also heavily favored in Kentucky’s May 20 primary.

Hillary wins Indiana by slim margin

May 7, 2008 at 3:31 am by Michael Zennie

Check out our full election night story here.

It looks like she ended up winning by just 22,000 votes. A close call and a cliffhanger until the very end.

And now, I might try to get some sleep. I hate diary-entry journalism, but just a note, I started blogging Tuesday’s primary at 10 minutes to midnight on Monday and I am making my last update at 3:30 a.m. Wednesday.

Obama addresses NC, says Hillary has likely won Indiana

May 6, 2008 at 10:12 pm by Kristi Oloffson

While addressing a crowd of suppporters in North Carolina, Obama said that in Indiana the victory appeared to be Hillary’s.

At Opie Taylor’s in Bloomington, many local Obama follwers still watch as the margin has narrowed to 52% Clinton, 48% Obama with 82% reporting. Many are hoping for Obama votes from areas that have yet to report, including larger metro areas like Gary and Lafayette, Ind.

After winning North Carolina, Obama addressed a crowd while the local supporters here gathered around 5+ televisions cheering and chanting “Yes We Can” periodically. Local volunteers, many IU students, beamed with admiration as the Democratic hopeful stressed more of the ideals he mentioned at a speech at IU last week, including hard work and equal opportunity for all. “They are not liberal values, they are not conservative values, they are American values,” Obama said. “I love this country too much to see it divided and distracted at this critical moment in history. I know the promise of America because I have lived it.”

Rose Byrne, a local Obama volunteer who will be a senior at IU in the fall, began crying during Obama’s speech when he talked about pulling troops out of Iraq. Just this afternoon Rose found out a friend of hers from high school died while serving in Iraq. “I didn’t really wanna go home and mourn it. I wanted to knock on doors and get someone in office who would change it,” she said. “It’s time to question why we’re there.”

The race tightens

May 6, 2008 at 9:01 pm by Kristi Oloffson

In Indiana, the margin is slim between Clinton, with 53%, and Obama with 47%. 57 percent of the precints are reporting.

The New York Times is reporting in Monroe County that Obama is leading 66% to Hillary’s 34%.

The Obama crowd is extremely energetic, many drinking beer and cheering loudly everytime Obama edges closer into Hillary’s lead. Many have begun a second “Yes We Can” chant.

I was speaking with a man named Larry Friedman who is a professor at both IU and Harvard and works for Obama’s campaign in several states. He was quick to praise the young student volunteers who have worked to support Obama. “These are the heroes- people your age,” he said. He added it reminded him of the 1960s. “(It’s) the same thing I felt in the 60s with Kennedy,” he said. “Sort of a magic charisma that we can somehow make change.”

The Clinton campaign watches at Greek’s

May 6, 2008 at 8:21 pm by Brian Hettmansperger

The party started off on a sour note when CNN called North Carolina in Obama’s favor just seconds after the polls in that state closed. One Clinton volunteer noted the same station called a presidential race incorrectly 8 years ago.

The party is quaint to say the least. 9-15 Clinton volunteers have trickled in and out since me and the photog got here.

IU graduate Olivia Morales is one of the volunteers at the party. She said the low-key get together is representative of the campaign Clinton has run the entire race. It’s about results, not flash, she said in reference to the Hollywood campaign Clinton’s opponent has run up to this point.

The local campaign coordinator should be arriving shortly, volunteers said.

More to come later

Turnout looks big across county

May 6, 2008 at 7:39 pm by Michael Zennie

Nothing is official yet, but Jessica White, the Monroe County Elections Supervisor, says that she expects to see a big turnout. As of a few minutes ago, not a single precinct had reported back to the county yet. This means that they are likely still voting people who were in line when the polls closed an hour and a half ago.

White said she expects that all of the precincts will be back in the next three hours and maybe, maybe they’ll be done by midnight.

But she added: “I’m just praying that I get to bed before the sun comes up.”

If the rest of the Bloomington precincts where ANYTHING like what I was seeing on campus, this could be a big, big boost to Obama.
