Four-star linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield committed Friday to Indiana football, according to CBS Sports. The Lincolnton, North Carolina native is the second linebacker and 13th player in the Hoosiers' 2027 recruiting class.
The 6-foot-1, 235-pound linebacker is the No. 20 ranked linebacker and No. 9 overall player in North Carolina. He’s also ranked as the No. 228 player in the nation, per Rivals. Mayfield chose Indiana over the University of Miami, the national runner-up last season, and Southeastern Conference champion University of Georgia.
Mayfield attended Fred T. Foard High School in Newton, North Carolina, as a freshman before transferring to Lincolnton High School. He also competes in track and field with limited reps in the 200-meter, 400-meter race, long jump and triple jump at Lincolnton.
Mayfield featured on both offense and defense during his junior year. He tallied 152 tackles, 6 sacks, 6 forced fumbles, 1 kick block and 1 punt block. As a running back, Mayfield rushed 63 times for 343 yards — 5.4 yards per carry — and 13 touchdowns across 13 games.
