United will cut another 1,250 jobs
CHICAGO -- United Airlines said Monday that it is cutting 1,250 more jobs, or 1.5 percent of its work force, and closing three reservation centers as part of cost-cutting efforts aimed at saving the troubled carrier about $100 million annually. More cutbacks are expected later this week by United as it joins other airlines in trimming back this fall to try to fight declining air traffic and mounting losses.
A search for the 'Great Pumpkin'
If you're like Charlie Brown's friend Linus, searching for the Great Pumpkin each Halloween, this year you need to look no further than Downtown Bloomington. The second annual Pumpkin Walk on the Square takes place this week from Oct. 22 through Oct. 27 and features about 25 pumpkins decorated by local artists and community members. The works of art are placed on display in storefront windows around the square and along Kirkwood Avenue.
New resolution asks for force
WASHINGTON -- The Bush administration said Monday it has revised a proposal to the U.N. Security Council to force Iraq to disarm and said officials were circulating the text for approval. The resolution carries the clear message that Iraq would be disarmed by force if it did not agree to surrender its weapons of mass destruction, said State Department spokesman Richard Boucher.
Suicide attack kills 16
KARKUR JUNCTION, Israel -- A car pulled alongside a commuter bus and exploded Monday, trapping passengers in the flaming vehicle. Sixteen people were killed and 30 wounded in what police said was a suicide attack.

Week full of honors
IU's reign over the Big Ten conference continued Sunday at Ohio State as the men's soccer team traveled to Columbus, Ohio and downed the Buckeyes 4-2. The win extended the Hoosiers consecutive winning streak in regular season conference games to 36 and gave IU its seventh consecutive No. 1 seed for the Big Ten Tournament.The team has also reclaimed the No. 1 ranking in both College Soccer News' poll and the adidas/NSCAA (National Soccer Coaches Association of America) poll.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Democrats who control the Indiana House are shooting at it. Democratic Gov. Frank O'Bannon is taking shots at it, too. So is the Indiana Democratic Party. As a group, Republicans who rule the Indiana Senate aren't saying anything about it. Senate Democrats are taking a collective pass, too, seemingly resigned with a sigh to still being outnumbered big time come Nov. 6, the day after the upcoming election.

Purdue alumni center to showcase accomplishments
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- Purdue University is building a $16 million alumni center and Hall of Achievement, which will feature the school's accomplishments through interactive kiosks and museum-like exhibits. The university gave some benefactors and graduates a first look Saturday at the plans. Funded by private sources, the 67,000-square-foot center is under construction on the eastern edge of campus. Completion is expected in late 2003 or early 2004.
Psychology Building additions finally complete
In the early 1980s, building an addition to the Psychology Building was a top priority. Decades later, the blueprints were folded, and the vision became a reality. The present Psychology Building opened in 1964. In the early 1990s, several labs relocated to the Hillcrest Psychology Annex. After planning and securing funds, the 21-month construction project began in 2000.
Two couples robbed outside Lindley Hall
Two couples were robbed by four males early Sunday morning after walking out of Lindley Hall, according to the IU Police Department. Soon after midnight Saturday, the two couples were walking toward Third Street when one of the males approached them holding a knife. The four men took an undisclosed amount of money from the two couples and fled westbound toward Bryan Woods, according to police reports.
New Web site encounters mixed views
Opinions on the new IU Bloomington Web site seem to vary greatly, after its debut two weeks ago. The new Web site appeared on the Internet Oct. 7 and has received some favorable views both on its functions and design.
State reports 26 probable West Nile cases
INDIANAPOLIS -- State health officials said Monday they had identified 26 new probable human cases of West Nile virus. This brings the total number of probable or confirmed human cases of the virus in Indiana to 228.

Loud upbeat music, dancing, singing, flashing lights, all made for a fantastic Friday evening at the IU Auditorium. "Blast II: SHOCKWAVE" is the sequel to the Tony and Emmy award winning production of Blast and the best show I have seen at IU.
