Hoosiers drop game, lose trophy to Purdue

With the Golden Boot on the line, the Hoosiers weren't able to muster enough offense to take down rival Purdue in their final regular season conference game of the year. The Boilermakers got their 10th win of the season in a 2-1 victory Friday night, holding the Hoosiers scoreless for most of the game.

CHICAGO -- Women's basketball Big Ten coaches and media weighed in on their league favorites and player of the year candidates at the conference's annual media day Sunday. The media tabbed Purdue as their pre-season front-runner, while the coaches earmarked defending conference champion Penn State.

CHICAGO -- The men's basketball season hasn't even started and Bracey Wright already has expectations to fill. The sophomore guard was selected to the Big Ten preseason All-Conference Team by the coaches and the media.

Swimming and diving places 3rd at SMU Classic The women's swimming and diving team wrapped up the weekend Saturday at the SMU Classic with a third-place finish. IU finished the classic with 252 points, behind No. 2 Florida and No. 5 SMU.

IU shows no offense while defense can't shut down OSU onslaught

Through three quarters of play Saturday, IU was outgained in yards by the Buckeyes more than nine times over, 461 to 51. While the Hoosier offense was going against the top defense in the Big Ten and one of the best in the country, the IU defense faced a Buckeye squad that ranked 10th in the conference in both pass and run offense.

Senior Joe Gonzalez sat in front of his locker Saturday afternoon with disgust on his face. The safety had just seen IU's defense surrender 603 yards of total offense to the Ohio State Buckeyes in their 35-6 win over the Hoosiers.

Big Ten Tourney in Indy in 2006 INDIANAPOLIS -- Indianapolis has been awarded the Big Ten men's basketball tournament for March 9-12, 2006, conference officials announced Sunday. Three weeks later, the NCAA Final Four will be held at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis.

Team beats No. 5 Saint Louis

A pair of Ned Grabavoy goals pushed the Hoosiers past their biggest test of the season by defeating No. 5 Saint Louis 2-1, extending their longest winning streak of the season to six while remaining unbeaten in their last eight matches. The Hoosiers (8-3-4, 4-0-1 Big Ten) have now outscored their opponents 14-2 in their last six games and are unbeaten in their last 20 home games. The Billikens drop to 9-3-2 on the season and losers of their last two.

Basketball ticket package cut to 8

For the second straight year, the IU ticket office has reduced the number of men's basketball tickets included in the season ticket package. After originally advertising 12 games in their student ticket package, the ticket office has cut that number down to eight after demand exceeded expectations. Some students have already received their refund of $44 on their credit cards.

IU in search of Big Ten win

The IU women's field hockey team will head east to Columbus, Ohio, this weekend to face off against the No. 18 Ohio State Buckeyes. The Hoosiers (7-6, 0-4 in the Big Ten) head into this weekend's match still looking for their first conference win of the season. On Sunday, the Hoosiers will return home for their final home game of the season against the Louisville Cardinals. Senior Molly Pulkrabek believes this is going to be a big weekend for the Hoosiers.

IU looks to end losing streak

The IU women's volleyball team heads to Illinois this weekend to compete against Big Ten rivals Northwestern and Illinois. The Hoosiers are currently riding a six-match losing skid and are looking to secure their first road win of the season.

Conference title in sight

The IU men's water polo team holds the Big Ten Championship this weekend, hoping to continue a record-breaking season by winning the conference title. Previously ranked as high No. 7 in the nation this season by the Collegiate Water Polo Association, the now-No. 8 Hoosiers have their sights set high for this tournament. The team begins play at 8 p.m. tonight at the Doc Counsilman Aquatic Center.

Golden Boot trophy up for grabs against Purdue

Clinging to the sixth spot in the Big Ten, the Hoosiers have been busy all week preparing for their final conference game of the season when they face in-state rival Purdue Friday. The two teams will be playing for the Golden Boot, which is awarded to whoever wins. Purdue holds the series advantage 4-1 all time, but the Hoosiers are looking for their second straight bid to the Big Ten tournament after starting the season slow.

IRL driver Renna dies in crash at 26 INDIANAPOLIS -- The investigation into the crash that killed Indy Racing League driver Tony Renna at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway will be hindered by a lack of visual evidence, an IRL spokesman said Thursday. Because Wednesday's crash happened during a test session for Firestone Tires, there was no video or still photography to document the event, John Griffin said.

No. 5 Billikens provide tough test

Two winning-rich soccer traditions clash tonight in Bloomington when the Hoosiers, winners of five consecutive matches, welcome the No. 5 St. Louis University Billikens into Armstrong Stadium. In their last five games, IU (7-3-4, 4-0-1 Big Ten) has outscored their opponents 12-1, including four consecutive shutouts while upping their Big Ten lead to four points over Michigan. The Hoosiers last allowed a goal in the first half against Michigan on Oct. 5 -- totaling 433 consecutive shutout minutes.

Former IU walk-ons now have scholarships

Rudy" brought them into the limelight. They're the definition of what college football is all about. They're walk-ons. Senior Matt Foss and junior Kyle Warriner walked onto the IU football team in 1999 and 2000, respectively. This summer, both were given scholarships by IU coach Gerry DiNardo for their hard work and contributions to IU's special teams.

Defending champions visit Memorial Stadium

It isn't getting any easier for IU. Two weeks after losing to Northwestern in overtime, the football team will play host to defending national champion and No. 8 Ohio State. IU is 2-21-2 at home against the Buckeyes and hasn't beaten them since 1988. The Hoosiers did have extra time to prepare, as the team had its bye last weekend. IU coach Gerry DiNardo spent the time off looking at film and said this team is better than last year, despite the 1-6 record.
