'Parentheses of Blood' explores politics through satire

In “Parentheses of Blood” by Sony Labou Tansi, directed by Edris Cooper-Anifowoshe, the mockery of corruption is bound to stir shrieking humor. The production opens at 7:30 p.m. Friday with additional shows Saturday and the next week at the Wells-Metz Theatre to close the Theatre and Drama Department’s fall season.

Holiday cheerless

It’s not that I don’t appreciate the nature of the season, but I’m Jewish and Chanukah is just not that important of a holiday. Still, it’s “that time of year” and I’m celebrating, too. So when someone is expressing his or her love for the season, it does feel a bit segregating when “Merry Christmas” is used as the generic season’s greeting.   And now Focus on the Family, a faith-based group dedicated to “sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ with as many people as possible,” is trying to take away my right to join in the holiday cheer altogether.

Joy of giving

In this year’s tight economy, especially, it may be easy to convince ourselves that giving is less important, or at least something that can wait. But rather than being a burdensome humdrum, giving can be one of the most exciting ways we spend our money.
