With football season beginning this Saturday, an Aug. 24 Indiana University Police Department press release urged fans to look out for signs of ticket fraud when purchasing and transferring tickets.
The release advised fans to verify where tickets are from, use official ticketing channels and be cautious of purchasing tickets through unofficial channels, including social media.
IUPD received a significant number of reports of ticket fraud last season, the release stated, and increased demand for tickets can give scammers more opportunities.
For the 2026 season, students are only able to select up to five out of the eight games at Memorial Stadium due to issues of demand. The selection of games was broken up into claim periods starting in August until October. Season tickets are officially sold out for this season.
According to IUPD Public Information Officer Hannah Cornett, most ticket scams through social media are difficult for law enforcement to investigate. Cornett said fraudulent sales are most commonly reported after transactions through Facebook, Snapchat and GroupMe.
For the rest of the 2026 season, there will be no single-game student ticket purchasing, according to the release. Student tickets cannot be resold, the release stated, and screenshots can’t be used for admission.
Instead, students can access and transfer their tickets through the GoIU app and must have their tickets added to their smartphone's digital wallet before arriving.
To purchase general public tickets, fans should go to iuhoosiers.com or SeatGeek. IU Athletics can only verify tickets bought directly from SeatGeek or the IU Athletics Ticket Office, according to the release.
“The IUPD encourages everyone to use caution before paying money online or providing bank account or credit card number information for a ticket to an individual or unofficial ticket office,” the report stated.
The release advises fans who believe they have been victims of ticket fraud to contact IUPD on campus to file a report.
