Stores prep for crowds

Area businesses are looking forward to the return of alumni this weekend for Homecoming, and not just because they mean extra sales. Ed Dyer, bartender at Nick's Old English Hut, said seeing old friends and regulars always makes Homecoming special.

Bizarre game gives us hope

Ravens 44, Seahawks 41 The stingy Baltimore Ravens allowed 41 points to Seattle -- and won. Down by 17 points in the fourth quarter, the host Ravens stormed back behind Anthony Wright and a surprisingly struggling defense.

Hoosiers down UNC-G 71-64 in season opener

Earlier in the week, IU coach Mike Davis wasn't sure who he could count on to be his top scorer. But in IU's 71-64 win over UNC-Greensboro, it was sophomore guard Bracey Wright who came out on top with 23 points, along with two assists and one block.

IU embarks on quest for Cup

After earning a first-round bye in the NCAA tournament by capturing the Big Ten Tournament Title, the Hoosiers' road to the College Cup begins Wednesday when border rival Kentucky arrives in Bloomington for a second-round matchup.

The bitter end

The battle for the Bucket turned into a 15-round slugfest. Heavily favored Purdue got all it wanted from the Hoosiers, yet in the end, the Boilermakers escaped Memorial Stadium with a 24-16 win Saturday. Purdue coach Joe Tiller said he was impressed with IU's play. "We feel fortunate to come out of here with a win," Tiller said. "We felt like Indiana played really inspired football, and our hats go off to them. I actually thought they played better than we did today at times. We had moments where we played extremely well, but also had moments where we were plain and flat getting outplayed by the Hoosiers."

Maryland company recalls ice cream WASHINGTON -- A Maryland company is recalling 12,504 half-gallon containers of ice cream from Indiana and other states because they may contain a rubber-like substance and present a choking hazard.

Officer hurt at tailgate

An IU Police Department officer was struck on the back of the head with a beer bottle Saturday as he tried to break up a fight after the Old Oaken Bucket football game. IUPD officer Brian Oliger was trying to arrest one of the men involved in the fight when another unidentified man smashed a bottle against the base of his skull, leaving a one-inch gash.

Music professor named 'Outstanding Mentor'

School of Music professor and Director of Bands Ray E. Cramer was recently recognized by the National Band Association as an Outstanding Mentor. During a concert on Oct. 28, former students Stephen W. Pratt, Associate Director of Bands, and Jay Gephart, Associate Director of Bands at Purdue University, presented the award to Cramer. According to the NBA Web site, the Outstanding Mentor Award represents a demonstration of substantive contributions to the quality of bands and band music. The award is presented on behalf of students around the country for whom Cramer has provided leadership, encouragement and musical insight during his career. Cramer is one of only a few who have ever received the Outstanding Mentor Award, Pratt said. He was nominated by a member of the NBA whom he had served during his career.

Georgian leader resigns

Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze resigned Sunday, after the opposition threatened to seize his residence and his support began to crack, with soldiers joining tens of thousands of protesters in the streets of the capital.

Alphas crown queen

Freshman Lanetz Speller was crowned the 2003 Miss Black and Gold Scholarship Pageant winner Saturday at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater. The event, hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha, is in its 11th year. Speller said she was surprised by the announcement.

Set design professor retires after years of service to University

After 24 years of teaching and creating set design for IU's Theatre and Drama Department, professor Wes Peters took his final curtain call with this weekend's production of "Romeo and Juliet." Peters, who will be retiring in December, announced the colorful set he created for the play will be his last.

Herbert selects Gros Louis

Former IU-Bloomington Chancellor Ken Gros Louis could have relaxed this coming winter in Santa Barbara, Calif. Instead, he will be back in Bloomington, serving in his old post. IU President Adam Herbert announced Friday he is recommending Gros Louis serve as interim chancellor beginning Jan. 1.
