Monroe County Sheriff's Department reports

A 6-year-old Templeton Elementary student ran into a passing vehicle while crossing the road to catch the school bus Tuesday morning, a police report states. According to the Monroe County Sheriff's Department, which received the call at 8:25 a.m., the girl was crossing Rolling Ridge Way when she ran into the side of a northbound car. The driver of the vehicle, Kirsten Paster, reported hearing a thump on the right rear passenger side of her car. When she stopped and looked behind her she saw a pedestrian lying on the roadway, the report said.

Police seek feedback for neighborhood program

Bloomington neighbors know to dial 911 when faced with emergency situations, but many might feel wary about contacting the police when their quality of life is violated within their neighborhoods. The Bloomington Police Department has scheduled a Neighborhood Watch Community Workshop for Thursday evening to unite neighbors, neighborhood representatives and members of the police department to establish community watch priorities and other goals for 2006.

Popular restaurant owner dies in fire

The owner of Bloomington restaurant Janko's Little Zagreb died in a house fire five miles west of Spencer Sunday night, according to Indiana State Police reports. Firefighters discovered John Pouch, 62, in his burning Owen County home, according to reports. Although Pouch lived alone, he is survived by two sons and a daughter from a former marriage. Scene investigators found his body near the front door, leading them to believe Pouch entered the house during the fire and was overcome by smoke.

Ireland comes alive at night

Rays of light begin to litter the streets on a damp daybreak in Dublin. The buildings are clean and fresh from the rain that whipped across the "fair city" the night before. The clouds are clearing and the sun is shining through, lighting up the spirits of the people lucky enough to enjoy this beautiful Irish morning. As is said here, "first up, best dressed," an old adage that rings true this morning. However, the truth strays from the original context. The saying carries over from harder times on the island. When a houseful of kids sharing clothes was a common thing in the country, the first up was the best dressed, for they had the biggest selection.

Fortunately for everyone, "the grand clearinghouse of all that should not be" known as the Internet offers plenty of artful choices for desperate shoppers clamoring to find a unique gift.

Senator Frist calls to block U.A.E. port sale

WASHINGTON -- Senate Republican Leader Bill Frist called Tuesday for the Bush administration to stop a deal permitting a United Arab Emirates company to take over six major U.S. seaports, upping the ante on a fight that several congressmen, governors and mayors are waging with the White House. "The decision to finalize this deal should be put on hold until the administration conducts a more extensive review of this matter," said Frist. "If the administration cannot delay this process, I plan on introducing legislation to ensure that the deal is placed on hold until this decision gets a more thorough review." But at the Pentagon, the UAE was praised as an important strategic military partner by both Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld and Gen. Peter Pace, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

Supreme Court turns down college media censorship case

U.S. Supreme Court members announced Tuesday they would not hear the five-year college media censorship battle Hosty v. Carter, leaving university media advisers uncertain of the future of the First Amendment issue. The case centers around a 2001 controversy when Governors State University Dean Patricia Carter told the school newspaper's printer not to publish the paper until administration had approved its content.

Former players consider Davis, IU's future

A.J. Moye said he believes Mike Davis is the master of paying attention to detail. The former Hoosier men's basketball player currently suits up for Keflavik in the Icelandic Express League. His squad finished second in the regular season and Saturday, his team lost to Grindavik 93-78 in the Icelandic Cup Final. Moye scored 20 points in the loss. He told the Indiana Daily Student in an e-mail interview Friday that he finds it unfortunate that Davis is stepping down. Click here to read Moye's full responses.

'Red Hot' music leads to complaint

At about 2 p.m. Monday, senior Bridget Meskauskas was disturbed while taking her statistics midterm on the second floor of Ballantine Hall. "All of the sudden I hear really loud music, and I could tell it was the Beatles," she said. The music she heard was coming from outside Ballantine, where Red Hot Presidential Candidate and junior Lenny Weiss was playing a keyboard and singing "happy tunes," as he said in an e-mail. Red Hot is running against Hoosier in elections for IU's student government, the IU Student Association. "It was great, it was a lot of fun," Weiss said. "We set up, I had a nice keyboard, and we sang songs for the people in the passing period, and people sat around and watched and sang along."

James Earl Jones comes to IU

It's not every day people get to hear the voice that launches every CNN broadcast, narrates Verizon Wireless commercials and beckons Luke Skywalker to follow its lead. IU students will get that chance Tuesday night when James Earl Jones speaks at the IU Auditorium. The award-winning screen and stage actor will speak at 7 p.m. Jones is speaking as part of IU's celebration of Black History Month. He will be speaking for about one hour and then will take questions from the audience before signing copies of his new autobiography, "Voices and Silences." Jones said he hopes to field as many questions from the audience as possible.

Women's hockey team secures bronze

TURIN, Italy -- Katie King wishes she could've thrown her gloves in the air like a graduation cap and jumped into a pile of her teammates on the ice. Instead, she and the rest of the U.S. women's hockey team had to settle for some hugs -- and a bronze medal. King scored two of her three goals in the first period to give the Americans a three-goal lead and they glided to a 4-0 victory over Finland on Monday, playing in a third-place game they would've rather watched on TV from their dressing room.

Americans garner silver medal in ice dancing

TURIN, Italy -- At last, a figure skating medal for the United States -- in ice dancing, of all things. And yet another Olympic gold for Russia. Tanith Belbin and partner Ben Agosto snapped the U.S. medals drought in figure skating with a silver Monday night. They were behind Tatiana Navka and Roman Kostomarov, who gave Russia a gold medal hat trick -- pairs, men's and dance. No nation has swept the four skating events in one games, and Russian Irina Slutskaya is favored in the women's competition.

IU leaves Mexico tourney as runner-up to Houston

The men's golf team concluded play in the Club de Golf Santa Anita-North Texas Classic Monday afternoon with its best performance of the 2005-06 campaign, but one team remained ahead of IU on the leaderboard. The University of Houston left Guadalajara, Mexico, as the tournament champion, finishing first out of 11 teams at one over par with a score of 865. IU finished three strokes behind, followed by Southern Louisiana at four strokes back. The Cougars were able to break away from IU and the Southern Louisiana with whom they were tied for first entering the final round. The Hoosiers suffered a flat start to the tournament, ending the first round 11 shots over par at 297. However, during the second round later that day, IU proved itself to still be a threat to win.

Race preparation officially begins for new riders with 'Rookie Week'

Little 500 season officially began yesterday as the rookies took the track at Bill Armstrong Stadium for Rookie Week. All rookie riders are required to practice this week to orient themselves to the finer points of the annual race. "It's a good week for the rookies to get their feet wet before the veterans come out to practice," said senior Riders' Council member Ryan Moore. "They will learn some of the things unique to Little Five, and it's just a good way for them to get comfortable."

Whenever budgets need cutting and belts need tightening, public broadcasting is always an easy target. When there are 300 channels providing a wide range of programming, it's quite easy for free-market adherents to say that PBS should simply vanish. So, to no one's surprise, when Bush proposed his budget, 13 percent of the public broadcasting budget was gone.
