Indiana University’s chapter of Beta Chi Theta was suspended June 3 for allegedly endangering others, hazing, noncompliance with university directives and interference with the university conduct process.
The South Asian social fraternity’s national headquarters suspended the IU chapter after it was previously placed on cease and desist by the university for hazing in November 2025. Suspensions require organizations to stop all activities and disband.
The university places organizations on cease and desist as an interim measure, preventing them from hosting and participating in social events while there is an ongoing threat or investigation.
Beta Chi Theta joins five other Greek life organizations that faced disciplinary action during 2026.
This summer, seven members of Phi Kappa Psi were charged with felony hazing after being put on cease and desist in October 2025 for alleged hazing. According to court documents, during that same month, several fraternity members allegedly ordered 36 pledges to exercise for three hours during an initiation event. Two pledges were hospitalized and diagnosed with rhabdomyolysis, a life-threatening disintegration of the muscles that can occur after excessive exercise and cause kidney damage.
In November 2025, the university suspended 27 of its fraternities from hosting social events after several alleged hazing incidents. Fraternities in good standing were allowed to resume all activities in December 2025.
The university ordered Beta Theta Pi to suspend recruitment and new member education in January. Delta Kappa Epsilon and Sigma Alpha Mu were placed on cease and desist for alleged hazing in February and March, respectively. Phi Delta Theta was placed on IU’s interim directives list for endangering others in April and Alpha Kappa Lambda was placed on cease and desist the same month for hazing.
Delta Kappa Epsilon, Sigma Alpha Mu and Alpha Kappa Lambda are now on disciplinary probation, which means further violations of conditions set by the university could result in sanctions, suspension or expulsion. Beta Theta Pi entered a voluntary agreement with the university to resolve issues including alcohol, hazing and risk management, and IU suspended Phi Delta Theta’s social activities.
