Pitchfork debacle

Pitchforkmedia.com is the bane or boon of rock journalism, depending on whom you ask. Since the Web site’s launch in 1996, the Internet music magazine has provided nibbles and bits of erudite music criticism to feed the hungry hipster masses. It has become an institution among indie fans.

On Friday, the Journal & Courier of Lafayette, Ind., revealed that, on June 30, Purdue University spent $576,778 on a party for 600 donors to the university. Purdue justified the expense by saying that it was a drop in the bucket compared to the $1.7 billion the donors had contributed, and that costs had increased due to the location and timing of the event (Mollenkopf Athletic Center had to be specially equipped, and student musical groups were unavailable in the summer).

Finally, the Indiana state government is looking at pragmatic solutions to our environmental woes. Last week, Sen. Richard Lugar announced that the federal government is setting aside money to help fund the efforts of an Indiana town trying to run completely on alternative energy sources.

2007 Miss Monroe County crowned

Alyssa Lampkins woke up at 5 a.m., Saturday, to tend to her show pigs at the Monroe County Fair. Fourteen hours later, she was crowned 2007 Miss Monroe County.

There’s something about Harry

Since 1997, readers have almost yearly immersed itself in the magical, mirror-image world of Harry Potter, a boy raised in England but educated in the ways of magic at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Harry’s coming-of-age tale, told in a language of wands, spells and the ever-present game of Quidditch, came to an end last week with the release of the last installment in author J.K. Rowling’s internationally renowned series. Fans flooded bookstores across the world to snatch up copies of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” and the scene at the Bloomington Barnes and Noble, 2813 E. Third St., was no different.

Edwin C. Marshall, professor and associate dean for academic affairs and student administration at the IU School of Optometry, was named vice president for diversity, equity and multicultural affairs Wednesday by IU President Michael McRobbie. Marshall replaces Charlie Nelms, who accepted the position of chancellor at North Carolina Central University, a position Nelms will assume at the beginning of August.

IU announced July 18 that Edwin C. Marshall, a professor and associate dean for academic affairs and student administration at the IU School of Optometry, has been named the next vice president of diversity, equity and multicultural affairs.

McRobbie appoints new administrators

Since IU President Michael McRobbie took office on July 1, IU administration has experienced several changes. With Edwin Marshall’s appointment to vice president of diversity, equity and multicultural affairs, he joins many other newly appointed administrators in McRobbie’s cabinet.

Pan American run over for Hoosier soccer players

For two IU soccer players, a run at Pan Am gold is over. Sophomore midfielder Kevin Alston and redshirt freshman midfielder Daniel Kelly and the rest of the U.S. soccer team were sent home with a 2-0 loss against Mexico on Saturday in the group play of the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Concert at the Buskirk

Wednesday evening was a typical sticky Indiana summer night – mugginess begging for sweet, floating voices and folk guitars to stifle the heat. The Union Board’s Live From Bloomington heeded the call and provided relief with a special concert event featuring the soft melodies of Mirah, with performances by Laura Veirs and The Delicious at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.
