The Indiana University Police Department discovered an individual with a gun Aug. 20 while patrolling near the McNutt Quadrangle and Walnut Grove residence center during a Welcome Week gathering.
According to an email from IUPD Public Information Officer Hannah Cornett, police encountered a person “heavily intoxicated” in the grass near Walnut Grove residence center. He has “no IU affiliation,” Cornett wrote.
Police requested medical attention due to the person's level of intoxication and then discovered that he had a firearm, violating IU public safety policy that prohibits any possession of a gun on university property.
He was given a misdemeanor citation of illegal consumption by a minor and a one-year trespassing warning for all IU property, Cornett wrote.
Cornett also wrote that IU increased their police and security at “large campus gatherings” last week.
The gatherings at McNutt Quadrangle are a popular social spot during Welcome Week, and recent social media posts have dubbed the event “McMosh.”
The McNutt gatherings also produced a second incident. Two IU students told officers patrolling a "large gathering at McNutt Quad” on Aug. 21 that they were approached by three male suspects who struck them in the face, but they did not report any injuries and did not want to pursue criminal charges.
