Fall ballet brings out Stravinsky's morbidity

World renowned artist John Clifford has choreographed movement to music ranging from classical Stravinsky to heavy metal Van Halen. This weekend Clifford brings his talents to the IU Ballet Theater for a retelling of Stravinsky's infamous and morbid one-act "The Rite of Spring." The show is the headliner for the theatre's "Colours of Dance" program beginning at 8 p.m. this Friday and Saturday at the MAC.

Orion Quartet embarks upon Beethoven set

Beethoven's string quartets are often held up as examples of his finest work. This set of 17 quartets spans most of Beethoven's career and a wide range of his musical styles. Over the next several months, students at IU will have the rare opportunity to hear them all.

Nappy Roots rocks the countryside

The weather was chilly, but the music and performers were so hot that steam literally rose from their heads. Sponsored by Kilroy's Sports, Chicago's very own 17th Floor and Kentucky's Nappy Roots gave a concert at Pic-a-chic Farms that Clutch from Nappy Roots said was real "nappy."

Famed conductor to come to IU

Sergiu Comissiona, a world-renowned conductor, will lead an IU School of Music orchestra at 8 p.m. Sunday at the Musical Arts Center. Thomas Wieligman, coordinator of instrumental ensembles at the Music School, said that very few schools in the country can call on someone like Comissiona, who has worked with some of the best orchestras in numerous countries.

Creative writing students share poetry, fiction works

Going to a fiction and poetry reading can help students escape the reality of the daily grind, and IU's creative writing program offers exactly that. The program fills the need with its year-long series of readings by visiting lecturers and students in the Master of Fine Arts in creative writing. Tonight marks the first of the readings.

Black film showcase to kick off Saturday

Two years of working and planning will finally pay off for the Black Film Center and Archive with the launch of two months of programs exploring the history of African Americans in cinema. "We are very excited," said Audrey McCluskey, director of the Black Film Center and Archive. "The exhibit hopes to explore the history of people of African descent in cinematic form."

Windfall celebrates 25 years of dance

Windfall Dance School, a not-for-profit organization that accepts participants of any age, is celebrating its 25th year of teaching and performing, but they have not gotten there without a struggle. A passion for dance and determination has helped the school not only continue, but grow in the past 25 years.

'Beat' photographs go on tour

ALLENTOWN, Pa. -- Smoking on a fire escape, a railroad brakeman's rule book stuck in his jacket pocket, Jack Kerouac looks as though he just stepped from the pages of "On the Road." The image is seen in a 1953 photograph taken by fellow Beat writer Allen Ginsberg. Ginsberg photographed the best minds of the Beat Generation in between bursts of creativity.

Classical guitarist leaves his qudiences speechless

Few performers start a concert with an apology, and usually it is not a good sign when they do. In Paul Vondiziano's case, the apology spoke more of his humility and supreme love for performing than his ability. "The guitar is a very sensitive instrument," Vondiziano said before he began playing.

Exhibit features local artist

Jail warden admits role in Dali theft

NEW YORK -- The crime was ... well, it was surreal. On an island inhabited by 14,000 accused criminals, a $250,000 Salvador Dali sketch disappeared during a midnight fire drill, replaced by a fake. And the people responsible were not the inmates, but four prison officials, authorities said.

Auction to benefit construction of Jill's House

The Bloomington Board of Realtors will hold an auction to benefit the construction of Jill's House, a recovery facility for patients of the Midwest Proton Radiotherapy Institute, at noon this Saturday, Oct. 4. The auction will begin after the completion of the Jill Behrman Run for the End Zone, the annual run held to raise funds for Jill's House and the Jill Behrman Scholarship Fund.

Fashion is a tricky industry to break into. It is considered to be one of the most difficult industries to break into along with music and acting. The fashion industry is full of hungry young people with experience and dedication who work hard. There are also people trying to get into the fashion industry with little to no knowledge of fashion, but they are easy to surpass. Success in any field depends on drive with tact.
