Indiana University placed fraternities Beta Theta Pi and Pi Kappa Phi on cease and desist Friday, according to the IU Office of Student Life.
Beta Theta Pi was placed on cease and desist for hazing and failure to comply, according to the Office of Student Life. Failure to comply with directions of authorized university officials in the performance of their duties is an example of personal misconduct, according to university policy. Pi Kappa Phi was placed on cease and desist for hazing and physical abuse, according to the website.
In an email to the Indiana Daily Student, IU Police Department Public Information Officer Julia Nowak wrote IUPD received a report from the Office of Student Conduct on Sept. 21 regarding an alleged hazing incident that occurred at Beta Theta Pi on Sept. 17. The case was referred to university officials for review, Nowak wrote.
IU spokesperson Mark Bode said in an email to the IDS the investigations for both fraternities are ongoing.
“Cease and Desist directives are placed when there are allegations of behavior that have caused or may cause harm to the members of the organization and/or the community,” Bode wrote in the email. “When an organization is placed on cease and desist, the organization is not allowed to host, attend, participate in any social events, recruitment events, membership education activities, brotherhood/sisterhood events, or philanthropy/service events.”
Beta Theta Pi was previously placed on cease and desist in December 2025 for alleged hazing.
Pi Kappa Phi was previously suspended from new member activities Sept. 16 until Oct. 6, 2025 for endangering others. The fraternity was also suspended from social activities involving alcohol from Sept. 16 to Oct. 17, 2025.
The four student organizations besides Beta Theta Pi and Pi Kappa Phi on cease and desist are Delta Tau Delta, the Palestine Solidarity Committee, Phi Kappa Psi and Theta Chi.
