Men to face Buckeyes

Time is crucial for the men's swimming team, and Saturday's meet is no exception. With only three meets left until the Big Ten Championships, the team is beginning the stretch drive starting 1 p.m. Saturday when IU meets Ohio State.

'Enemy territory' awaits Hoosiers

The women's swim team is traveling Saturday to take on the Ohio State Buckeyes (1-7) at 1 p.m. It will be their first meet on the road this season, and head coach Dorsey Tierney said she welcomes the challenge.

Big Ten powers to meet

In women's track Saturday, the defending Big Ten champion Hoosiers face Michigan, the 1999 champion, in Ann Arbor, Mich. Both teams' coaches have different ideas of what could happen.

Teams vie in indoor play

The men's track team hopes to defeat defending Big Ten champion Wisconsin during this year's indoor season, but first it must challenge rival Michigan in its first meet at 10:30 a.m. Saturday in Ann Arbor, Mich. Michigan took first in five events during last week's unscored Jack Harvey Invitational. The Wolverines already have a meet under their belts, but coach Marshall Goss said his team is ready.

Hoosiers to face state rival in series

A well-rested hockey team, now with its all-time leading scorer back in the fold, will face off against Purdue in a conference home-and-home series this weekend. The action begins tonight at Purdue's home ice in Fishers before coming to Bloomington at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Frank Southern Center, 1965 S. Henderson Ave.

Team seeks redemption

A year ago, IU was embarrassed at Assembly Hall by then-No. 6 Penn State. The Hoosiers were outplayed in every facet of the game by the Big Ten's best team that season. In the 74-36 drubbing -- by far the worst performance of the year -- the Hoosiers shot an abysmal 21 percent from the floor and were outscored by 32 points in the second half.

Women rebound from loss

Minnesota stayed competitive with the women's basketball team Thursday, matching basket for basket with only a minute left. But they were already down by 10. And it was only the first half.

IU takes control

A different women's basketball team took the floor in Thursday night's win against Minnesota (7-8, 0-4 Big Ten). The Assembly Hall crowd was on its feet cheering the Hoosiers, as they routed the Golden Gophers, 92-64.

Forest Service issues directive

In a speech that conveyed a clear challenge to President-elect George W. Bush and his incoming administration, outgoing U.S. Forest Service Chief Mike Dombeck unveiled an initiative Jan. 8 that calls for the protection of the nation's remaining old growth forests. Speaking at a conference at Duke University, Dombeck said the time has come for the Forest Service to take the "long view" and enact policies that prohibit the harvesting of old growth trees, according to the Associated Press.

Mayor considering run for state post

Mayor John Fernandez thinks Indiana needs new ideas. And he thinks he might be just the person to innovate. Fernandez said he might seek the Democratic nomination for Indiana secretary of state, a seat that will be up for election in 2002. He has made no formal declaration of candidacy and said that might still be a year away.

Students voice concerns about universal bus pass

While a final decision on a proposed universal campus bus plan is yet to be made, some students have been voicing their concerns. The plan would make it possible for any student to ride any IU or Bloomington Transit bus with their student ID. But, like any service, it would come with a price.

Around the residence halls

RHA offers tickets for Ice vs. Oilers Tickets are still available for $5 for the game 7:30 p.m. today between the Indianapolis Ice and the Tulsa Oilers. For $10 more, the Ice will offer a ride to the game and back. Prizes will also be awarded during the game. Tickets can be purchased at residence hall center desks by asking for Ice tickets. The trip is sponsored by Residence Halls Association.

2 charged with robbery

Two men accused of robbing Settle Jewelry last week were formally charged Tuesday in Monroe County Circuit Court. Brishon Bond, 27, and Charles Wade Brown, 23, both students at IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis, were charged with two counts of armed robbery and 10 counts of criminal confinement.

University spokesman discusses Knight firing

INDIANAPOLIS -- "Control the message and flow of information. If you don't do that, it's totally out of your control." Christopher Simpson, vice president for public affairs and government relations, gave this advice to a group of public relations professionals Wednesday in Indianapolis. He was the keynote speaker at a meeting of the Hoosier Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America.

Eco-terrorists take credit for N.Y. fires

ELF has struck again. The Earth Liberation Front, a radical environmental group active since 1992, took credit for the arson of three luxury houses during New Year's weekend. The homes were being built on a former peach farm in Long Island, New York. The fires came at the end of a year of damage in Monroe County.

Delts settle decade-old rape lawsuit

After a legal battle that lasted a decade, lawyers for Delta Tau Delta fraternity, 1431 N. Jordan Ave., and alumna Tracy Johnson Guthrie have settled a rape lawsuit that dates back to 1990. Guthrie's attorney, Ron Elberger of Bose, McKinney and Evans in Indianapolis, said the case was settled December. The parties signed a confidentiality agreement and cannot discuss its terms, he said. "It's resolved, and that's it," Elberger said. He said all parties to the lawsuit were pleased with the outcome. Delts' lawyer, Douglas B. King of Wooden & McLaughlin in Indianapolis, could not be reached for comment.

Clinton honors IU professor

With only a handful of days left until he leaves office, President Bill Clinton has appointed Folklore Professor Henry H. Glassie to serve on the National Council of the Humanities. Glassie is also acting chair of the Department of Near Eastern Languages and Cultures. Along with him, there are nine other appointees. These include educators, archivists and a film director.
