Phi Delta Theta claims third Little 500

Phi Delta Theta avoided wrecks and battled a surprising late-race charge by Teter to claim the 51st Men\'s Little 500 Saturday at Bill Armstrong Stadium. Phi Delta Theta took the lead from Teter on lap 190. Teter, which controlled the race from laps 162-190, finished second followed by Sigma Phi Epsilon. Teter and Sigma Phi Epsilon were the only two teams to finish on the lead lap with Phi Delta Theta. Phi Delta won the race with a time of 2:16:57. Junior Matt Marketti was on the bike for Phi Delta Theta when it crossed the finish line. Senior Josh Beatty rode the most laps for the team.

Drunken driving bill goes to governor

State lawmakers overwhelmingly voted Thursday to lower Indiana's threshold for drunken driving to .08 percent blood-alcohol content. The legislation, which lended drama to this year's session, awaits Gov. Frank O'Bannon's signature. The governor, who has lobbied for a lower threshold, pledged to sign the bill.

Group criticizes balloon launch

Not every student will cheer during the traditional balloon launch celebration before the men's Little 500 race Saturday. The Student Environmental Action Coalition believes the launch might be detrimental to the environment; a view not shared by many race organizers.

Senior diver makes final cut

IU diver Tom Davidson advanced to Saturday's three-meter springboard finals at the U.S. Diving National Championships. Davidson racked up 553.74 points in Wednesday's first round in Midland, Texas. Davidson, a senior, qualified fourth, 80 points behind leader Troy Dumais of Texas. Dumais claimed last season's national title.

IU squeezes by Butler with 2 late goals

It took two late goals for IU to beat its in-state rival Butler 2-1 Wednesday night in a spring soccer match at North Central High School in Indianapolis. Junior Ryan Mack scored both goals in the win.

Saturday, Little 500 racers will be speeding around the Bill Armstrong Stadium track, but before that, the women's track team plans to scorch its own track against Illinois and Eastern Michigan.

The women's tennis team said it hopes to end the regular on a winning note this weekend, as they are host to two neighbors to the north -- Michigan Saturday and Michigan State Sunday, both matches starting at 10 a.m.

Hoosiers competing in shadow of Little 500

The Little 500 men's race is Saturday, but don't remind the men's track team of that. It is working to stay focused on its noon home meet against Illinois and Eastern Michigan, the last scored home meet for the Hoosiers before the Big Ten Championships May 18-20 at home. "This Saturday will be a good test for the team," third-year coach Marshall Goss said. "Can we stay focused when there is lots of other stuff going on around us and can we run a little bit earlier in the day?"

The baseball team competes with the Little 500 race for campus attention this weekend as the Hoosiers face Eastern Kentucky in a three-game series at Sembower Field.

Team to play crucial series

The softball squad will be in Chicago today for a doubleheader against Northwestern that could turn out to be one of the most crucial series of the year. With a pair of wins today, the Hoosiers (3-9) could move past the Wildcats (4-6) in the Big Ten standings. IU is tied with Minnesota for 10th in the conference.

Alumnus celebrates Little 500 on film

Not all the activities during this year's Little 500 weekend will occur on the track. Producer Kendall Harnett's documentary about the history of the race, "Free Wheels: The Fifty Year History of the Little 500," is scheduled to premiere Saturday, before and after the men's race.

State to close developmental center, relocate its residents

The state plans to close the troubled Muscatatuck State Developmental Center by December 2003 and transfer its remaining 279 residents elsewhere. The administration of Gov. Frank O'Bannon also said it was freezing all new admissions to Madison State Hospital while officials work on a downsizing plan there.
