Coach Lynch press conference notes and quotes

As usual, IU coach Bill Lynch spoke to the media this afternoon. Here are some highlights. Team making progress? One of the thoughts I've heard this week has been the idea that IU is actually improving - it's just the fact that playing three straight games against top 25 teams (Iowa and Wisconsin the past two weeks; Penn State this week) has kept them from the winning side.

Bielema wants review of muffed punt

Did IU score one more touchdown than they should have on Saturday? I just saw a link to this story - Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema is asking the Big Ten to review wide receiver David Gilreath's muffed punt in the first quarter that IU safety Collin Taylor recovered. By rule, the receiving player has the opportunity to catch the ball before it hits the ground, even after muffing the punt. When a valid fair catch signal is made, the unimpeded opportunity to catch a free or scrimmage kick is extended to a player who muffs the kick and still has an opportunity to complete the catch.

IU released its depth chart today, and running back Darius Willis is listed as the starter. Willis, who injured his leg against Wisconsin and did not return to the game, has been hobbled by various injuries all season.

Less than 11 minutes later, MSU responded with a goal from midfielder Jeamie Deacon off a penalty corner. In the 33rd minute, the Spartans scored from a goal by midfielder Floor Rijpma off an assist by back Angie Lucik. 24 seconds later, Michigan State scored again off Deacon's hard shot to the back of the net.
