Which coach has a higher base salary - Bill Lynch or Nick Saban?

You'll find the answer in USA Today's comprehensive look at college football coaching salaries. Of course, it's always interesting to see how Bill Lynch's salary ranks nationally and among Big Ten football programs. Lynch's contract is also available for download in .pdf format in the salary database if you're interested. I enjoyed reading through it.

And yes, Lynch's base salary is higher than Saban's. Of course, Saban also has $3.7 million in other income through his coaching position at Alabama.

Here are some other highlights.

  • Lynch's total income and base salary is last in the Big Ten (Northwestern does not release contract info). He makes $308,750 as a base salary and $350,000 in other income - $658,750 total. In contrast, every other conference coach except Danny Hope makes more than $1 million. Jim Tressel's contract totals $3.72 million.
  • In a national perspective, only Paul Wulff (Washington State) makes less total income per year than Lynch amongst BCS conference teams. In fact, the next closest BCS coach to Lynch (Dabo Swinney, Clemson) makes $150k more than Lynch.
  • USC's Pete Carroll is the highest paid coach ($4.4 million), with Oklahoma's Bob Stoops, Florida's Urban Meyer, Saban and LSU's Les Miles in the top five. OSU's Tressel ranks sixth nationally.

What are your thoughts on the coaching salaries? On Lynch's pay?
