On Wednesday, the Big Ten Conference committee announced that that Columbus, Ohio, will be home to the Big Ten Baseball Tournament for the 2010, 2011 and 2012 seasons. In 2009, Columbus' Huntington Park hosted the Big Ten Conference Tournament, and drew more than 12,000 fans, its' highest total attendance in the past decade.
The IU football team doesn't have to wait until February to get its first hard commitment, as linebacker Jeff Thomas has become the first to sign a National Letter of Intent for 2010, IU coach Bill Lynch announced today. For the past six years, Mike Freitag was the king of IU soccer. Two weeks after IU Athletics announced Freitag's contract would not be renewed, the throne of the seven-star program remains empty. But it's close to being filled. "It's a matter of days, not weeks," Athletics Director Fred Glass said.
IU junior middle blocker Ashley Benson has broken yet more ground in Hoosier volleyball history, becoming the program's first All-American. Benson, who finished the 2009 season with a school record .361 hitting percentage as well as a 1.18 blocks-per-set average, ranking 49th nationally, was named Third Team All-America by the American Volleyball Coaches' Association (AVCA) Wednesday. While former IU volleyball players Karen Dunham and Erica Short have garnered honorable mentions for All-America selection, Benson is the first to be named to one of the three rosters. The Bloomington Herald-Times is reporting University of Illinois-Chicago coach John Trask, Wisconsin coach Todd Yeagley and University of Alabama at Birmingham coach Mike Getman are the three candidates being considered for the vacant head coaching spot on the IU men's soccer team. According to the report, Trask interviewed Monday, Yeagley interviewed Tuesday and Getman is in town today.
The Big Ten conference is exploring the possibility of expanding to 12 teams, yahoosports reports. The move appears to be primarily motivated by the desire to extend the football regular season and hold a conference championship game.

IU field hockey's senior defender Mutsa Mutembwa won the Rhodes Scholarship, becoming the fourth student- athlete from Indiana University to win the award. Mutembwa earned a scholarship to go to University of Oxford, where she is allowed to take any Oxford course to complete her Masters. All University fees are paid off by the Rhodes trust. Today, IU baseball coach Tracy Smith announced two right-handed pitchers will join the team. Matt Ernest, a 6-foot-2 red-shirt sophomore, and Casey Smith, a 6-foot-1 local product out of Bloomington North, will look to help strengthen a pitching staff that only had seven healthy pitchers this fall and lost its' top two starters to the draft last June. Prior to the season, Tom Crean joked about not wanting to lead the nation in turnovers again. He's got one thing going for him, but ball control is starting to look like an overrated statistic.
