The IU Office of Student Life placed IU’s chapter of the Sigma Alpha Mu fraternity on cease and desist Wednesday for hazing, according to the OSL website. The investigation is ongoing, IU spokesperson Mark Bode said in an email to the Indiana Daily Student.
Cease and desist directives are issued when there are allegations of behavior that have caused or may cause harm to members of the organization or the community. While on cease and desist, the fraternity is not allowed to host, attend or participate in any organizational activities, including recruitment and philanthropic initiatives.
The fraternity joins six other IU organizations currently on cease and desist. These include fraternities Alpha Epsilon Pi, Beta Chi Theta, Delta Kappa Epsilon, Phi Kappa Psi, Tau Epsilon Phi and the Palestine Solidarity Committee.
In November 2025, 27 fraternities, including Sigma Alpha Mu, were barred from hosting social events. OSL Vice Chancellor Lamar Hylton announced the ban in a Nov. 14 letter to the IU Interfraternity Council.
“The risk is too high to continue this arrangement given the status of the IFC community,” Hylton wrote in the letter.
Sigma Alpha Mu was also included in a March 2025 order from the IFC and Panhellenic Association that temporarily paused all social events due to community health and safety concerns.
The fraternity was previously placed on disciplinary probation from December 2022 through December 2023 for endangering others and alcohol, according to the OSL website.
