The Office of Student Life ordered the Indiana University chapter of fraternity Beta Theta Pi to suspend recruitment and new member education programs Jan. 27. An investigation is ongoing, according to a Jan. 29 statement from IU spokesperson Mark Bode.

OSL’s website states the fraternity was put on disciplinary status due to hazing. It is under interim directives, meaning the restrictions will continue until the investigation concludes.

Beta Theta Pi is one of two organizations under interim directives. The other, the IU chapter of fraternity Sigma Phi Epsilon, was suspended from all social activities effective Oct. 31.

Beta Theta Pi was already on disciplinary probation dating back to April 15 for alcohol, hazing, non-compliance with Office of Sorority and Fraternity Life policies and sexual harassment. Its probation is scheduled to end Feb. 15.

The fraternity was also ordered to cease all social activities between Sept. 16 and Oct. 14 and placed on cease and desist Dec. 9 last year.

Beta Theta Pi is the first organization to face disciplinary action this semester. Seven organizations were placed on cease and desist during the fall semester.
