Walk-on leads team to successful season

IU's men's track team is full of athletes who run without a scholarship. There are a limited number of scholarships available and many positions to fill. One of these walk-ons to the team has helped play a large role in the teams' success this season. Junior Matt Harris is a 60 meter hurdler who currently ranks fourth in the Big Ten. He also is the school record holder with a time of 7.98 seconds.

Injured sophomore springs back into action

Just over one month into his season, sophomore Coyte Cooper went through what no athlete wants to experience. At the Midlands Tournament at the end of December, Cooper strained his knee and partially tore his MCL. The injury kept Cooper out until the start of the Big Ten season. Throughout the recovery process, Cooper managed to keep a clear focus.

Lack of Jeffries too much for Hoosiers to overcome

So this is what life is like without Jared Jeffries. IU hobbled through Wednesday night's Big Ten matchup with Wisconsin. Jeffries, who sprained an ankle in a win against Louisville Saturday and bruised his thigh earlier in the week, hobbled through warm-ups. Then, the Big Ten's leading scorer sat and stood during the game before somberly walking off the Assembly Hall floor after the Badgers upset No. 22 IU 64-63. Not once did he remove his red warm-up jacket or his candy-striped pants.

Badger comes home

Coming home isn't a big deal anymore for Charlie Wills. Wills, an Angola, Ind. native, came back to the Hoosier state Wednesday, content with the thought that coming home again isn't important. You couldn't tell. Wills, a fifth-year senior, lit up IU for a game-high 17 points Saturday as Wisconsin upset No. 22 IU 64-63 in Assembly Hall.

DiNardo's first staff announced

Start with two high school coaches. Add the son of IU's all-time winningest football coach and the younger brother of the school's athletics director. Throw in some sprinkles that include someone who experienced the Notre Dame coaching fiasco from the inside, a coach from Graceland and a running back coach who spent a season in the XFL. And top it off with two well-traveled coordinators.

Badgers buried in Assembly Hall losing skid

Coach Bo Ryan remembers the last time Wisconsin won in Assembly Hall. Ryan was a Badger assistant. He was 29 years old and Wisconsin hasn't won in Bloomington since Feb. 24, 1977. That's 22 losing trips, average losses of more than 15 points per game and only eight games decided by less than 10 points.

Leader of the pack

In other words, as the second week of February in the Big Ten begins, the No. 22 Hoosiers are in first place, by themselves, and in control of their future. After fighting past Louisville Saturday, IU begins its final six games of the regular season tonight when it faces Wisconsin at Assembly Hall at 8 p.m.

Junior runners dominate Big Ten

Rachelle Boone and Danielle Carruthers are more than just some of the best runners in their events at IU. They are also some of the best runners in the country. The two juniors have trained and raced together during the past three years here at IU. As members of the 2000 and 2001 Big Ten Championship 4x400-meter relay team, these women have proven that they not only are fine athletes, but devoted to their team as well.

Bennett's health improves; players enjoy bye week

The prayers continue. The hospital visits continue. And the waiting continues. Women's basketball coach Kathi Bennett's return to the sidelines after a car accident remains indefinite. Her team can only plan to have associate head coach Trish Betthauser at the helm for the near future.

Football player faces charges

Junior cornerback Clarence "C.J." Young, 21, was arrested Friday at his residence in connection with an alleged sexual assault that reportedly occured at a party in the University Commons apartment complex Oct. 6, 2001. Young is being charged with attempted rape, a class B felony; sexual battery, a class C felony; criminal confinement, a class D felony; and battery, a class A misdemeanor.

Coach returning home Wednesday

Personal bests set at weekend meet

Never underestimate the talent of the IU women's track and field team. The undefeated ladies dominated the competition by running away with the 2002 United States Track Coaches Association Collegiate Cup by 44 points. Without even racing the 4x400-meter relay, the Hoosiers scored 139 points, defeating three Big Ten schools. Michigan took second with 95 points, with a gap between itself and the host team, Penn State (68). They were followed by Pittsburgh (56), Central Michigan (54), Toronto (47), Kent State (45), West Virginia (36), Cornell (36), Buffalo (10), Michigan State (8) and Air Force (2).

Ramsy looks to be premiere sprinter

On Saturday against Purdue in the 50-yard freestyle, the field of IU sprinters was without season best time holder sophomore Claes Andersson. Sophomore Dale Ramsy made sure the results didn't take a hit. Ramsy swam to a first place finish, good for a personal season best.

Senior starting to make waves

When senior diver Erin Quinn was in high school at Sylvania Northview in Sylvania, Ohio, she was a two-time Ohio state champion and an All-American. Her success led Quinn to be pursued by IU, Minnesota, Ohio State, Alabama and Arkansas in the recruiting process. Quinn eventually chose IU because of its strong team and diving coach Jeff Huber's success in creating national-caliber divers.

Football player arrested for sexual assault

Junior cornerback Clarence Young was arrested Friday at his home after a warrant was filed Thursday by the Bloomington Police Department. Young is being accused of attempted rape, sexual assault and criminal confinement, all felonies, after a 19-year-old woman accused Young of assaulting her at a party Oct. 6, 2001, police said.

Team comes from behind to pull out a victory

The IU men's track team won the Collegiate Cup this weekend at Penn State's banked track. The meet was highly contested with the Hoosiers scoring 105 points to beat the second place Nittany Lions by six. Both teams came into the competition ranked in the top 10 nationally, and the two lived up to their billing. The 3rd place Michigan Wolverines only scored a total of 59 points.

Top recruits prepare to compete

The Indiana University women\'s track team was able to bring several top recruits to IU with the success of last season. These recruits will get their first opportunity to compete for the team against the Michigan Wolverines. The meet will be held noon Saturday in the Gladstein Fieldhouse.

Team drops match, coach remains pleased

The IU men's tennis team (5-2) lost a hard fought match 4-3 to Vanderbilt Sunday at the Indiana Tennis Center. First, the Hoosiers lost the doubles point, dropping all three matches to Vanderbilt (3-0). Then, they lost three out of six singles matches to spell defeat. The match went down to the wire, and IU gave maximum effort all day. That effort pleased coach Ken Hydinger.

Senior Day: A defeat for Purdue

Senior Day at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center Saturday meant the final dual meet of Heath Montgomery's career. Facing Purdue meant bragging rights were on the line. The Hoosiers made sure that Montgomery went out in style -- bragging rights and all -- as they defeated the No. 21 Boilermakers 136.5-106.5.

U.S. wins gold in women's halfpipe

SALT LAKE CITY -- Old school, meet the new school. Snowboarder Kelly Clark, in an Olympic event that's all of 4 years old, soared above the halfpipe course to win America's first Winter Games gold on a day when other countries snapped decades-old winless streaks in more traditional sports.
