Noonan nets OT game-winner against Jaguars

IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis took the IU men's soccer team to limit on a cold and drizzly afternoon yesterday as it took the No. 5 Hoosiers double overtime to down the Jaguars 2-1. With the win, IU (14-2-2) concluded its regular season play undefeated at home going 5-0-2 record at Bill Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers dominated much of the play as they had 15 shots on goal to the Jaguars' three. IU also had season highs with 33 shots and 17 corner kicks in the match. IUPUI freshman goalkeeper Drew Deffner made 13 saves on the day, an opponent high against the Hoosiers this season.

Hoosiers pull off pair of wins

The competition was fierce and the score close as the No. 13 ranked Hoosiers competed against the No. 14 ranked Fight Irish at Notre Dame on Friday. The final score was 154-146; IU. The entire 16 event meet came down to the last event, the 400 yard freestyle relay. The Hoosiers were trailing the Irish by one point upon entering this event. Freshman Nina Thurston, senior Anne Williams, and sophomore Tammy Kostner swam the first three legs of the relay.

Toughest dual meet of season

The IU women's swim team goes into the weekend's dual meets after an easy 185.5-103.5 victory against Evansville. Notre Dame, however, will likely provide more competition for the Hoosiers. IU, which is ranked No. 13 in the nation by College Swimming Coaches Association of America on Wednesday, will travel to South Bend to take on the No. 14 Fighting Irish at Notre Dame. The next day the women will be on the road again to Champaign-Urbana Illinois to face the Fighting Illini.

Team looks for third win

After sweeping Evansville and winning 12 of 13 events against Michigan State, the 2-0 IU men's swimming and diving teams look to continue their winning ways. Today, the Hoosiers host the 0-1 Iowa Hawkeyes at 5 p.m. at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. When IU and Iowa met last season in Iowa City, the Hoosiers were victorious with a score of 169-130. IU leads the overall series against Iowa 18-12, including an 8-4 record in Bloomington. But that does not mean that the Hoosiers will be taking the Hawkeyes lightly.

NBA: It's Still FANtastic

As another NBA season tips off, you're probably hearing rumblings about how bad the league's product is. The influx of teenagers who leave college early, or don't go at all, is bad for the game. Too much individuality is ruining the game. Too many thugs, no parity, Western conference, Eastern conference, blah, blah, blah.

IU prepared for weekend matches

Looking to double their win total of a year ago, the Hoosiers (15-7, 5-5), head north to face the No. 15 ranked Wisconsin Badgers in Madison on Friday night and the Northwestern Wildcats on Saturday night in Evanston. IU has won four out of five Big Ten matches, their only loss coming last Saturday night against the No. 8 Minnesota Golden Gophers. The Hoosiers are one game back of third place Wisconsin heading into Friday's match.

Hoosiers take on Spartans in makeup game

IU's season ended last year in the national semifinals to Life University. Life won the ACHA Division II Championship. It is a title Life will not be defending. In August, Life University cut its club hockey team along with its other athletics programs in an attempt to bolster its academic reputation. The move left a void in the IU hockey schedule that will be filled this weekend with one game against Michigan State (1-2-1) at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at Frank Southern Arena.

Big Ten Championship kicks off Sunday

At the beginning of the season the IU women's cross-country team had a vision -- a vision that the Hoosiers would make their first run at a Big Ten crown in more than a decade. Sunday at Purdue, the Hoosiers will try and make the vision a reality. Junior Becky Obrecht said she believes the team is up to the task.

Team takes on Big Tens

This Sunday the Hoosiers will look to continue their early-season success as they travel to Purdue for the Big Ten Championship meet. The team is ranked No. 18 in the nation and enters the tournament as a favorite, but will receive strong competition with four other teams ranked in the top 20. Also looking to compete for the Big Ten title are No. 11 Wisconsin, No. 12 Michigan, No. 15 Minnesota and No. 20 Ohio State. Wisconsin finished fifth in the NCAA meet last year.

Games to seed tourney

Hoosiers hope to bounce back from bad loss

The Hoosiers hope to snap their two game losing streak and break out of their recent offensive funk when they take on Northwestern at 12:10 p.m. in Evanston, Ill. Both teams are coming off big losses last week. IU (3-5, 1-3) lost an ugly game to Illinois last Saturday on the road. The Hoosiers are winless on the road this season. The IU offense was unable to produce any touchdowns until the final four minutes of the game.

Seniors shine in final game

The women's soccer team recognized its six seniors at Armstrong Stadium last night with the 10th annual Senior Night. After the pre-game festivities, IU went out and battled its in-state rival, the Butler Bulldogs. Butler, from the Horizon Conference, came to Bloomington with a 12-4 record, and looked to spoil Senior Night. A pair of seniors wouldn't allow that. After dominating Butler in most statistical categories for 85 minutes and spoiling numerous chances, IU (10-6-2, 4-4-2 Big Ten) finally scored a goal for a 1-0 win. It was scored by senior forward Jenny Mann, who was assisted by fellow senior forward Kate Kastl. The win improved IU to 4-5-1 all time against the Bulldogs. The goal gave the Hoosiers a win in their final regular season game before the Big Ten tournament, which begins in East Lansing, Mich. next Thursday.

Jeffries makes NBA debut in 74-68 loss

TORONTO -- Morris Peterson scored 20 points and Michael Jordan went scoreless in the second half -- and even missed a dunk -- as the Toronto Raptors opened their season with a 74-68 victory over the Washington Wizards on Wednesday night.

Sophomore takes on leadership role for IU

LoVecchio loving life as a Hoosier

One might think that it must be pretty frustrating to be Matt LoVecchio. For the first time since third grade, he won't be playing in an organized football game all season. The team that he once quarterbacked, Notre Dame, is undefeated and in the thick of the National Championship hunt.

Experienced coach admired by players

In 23 years of coaching the women's tennis team, the one constant for Lin Loring has been success. During the span, Loring has led IU to 15 Big Ten titles, 19 National Championship appearances and a National Championship in 1982.

Pacers primed for opener

INDIANAPOLIS -- Yao Ming, the Houston Rockets' 7-foot-5 rookie and the No. 1 pick in this year's draft, will make his NBA debut Wednesday night against the Indiana Pacers. "I think Yao is going to be a great player," Thomas said. "He's got all the tools to be one of the great centers in this league." Yao did not join the Rockets until Oct. 20 and played in just two preseason games, averaging 9.5 points and 4.5 rebounds in 18.5 minutes a game. "He's big, he's got a great touch around the basket, he's got good hands, can pass the basketball, has good skill and he understands the game of basketball," Thomas said.

New A's manager named

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Ken Macha was promoted from bench coach to manager of the Oakland Athletics on Tuesday to replace Art Howe. The A's didn't wait long to replace Howe, who officially was hired Monday as manager of the New York Mets. After interviewing for years, the 52-year-old Macha didn't have to leave to finally become a manager.
