Bloomington man trapped in car

On Sunday morning, 30-year-old Bloomington resident Ryan T. Rene was headed southbound in the 1600 block of Rogers St. when his car slid 100 feet and split a telephone pole in half, said Bloomington Police Department Lt. David Drake.

Man arrested for threat on girlfriend with knives

On Sunday, Bloomington Police arrived at an apartment at the 3100 block of E. Stratum Way. There, a female dialed 911 claiming that her boyfriend, 20-year-old Bloomington resident Tyler Stephen Strother, threatened to kill her with two knives.

GOP candidate Sodrel to run for Congress

INDIANAPOLIS – Former Republican Rep. Mike Sodrel announced Monday he was running again for Congress, setting up a possible fifth consecutive campaign against Democratic Rep. Baron Hill in southern Indiana’s 9th District.Sodrel sent an e-mail to supporters announcing his bid for the Republican nomination, although another GOP candidate plans to argue it’s time for a new person to challenge Hill.

The abroad blues

I know I am not the only person losing a friend to the allure of exotic places and interesting people. We are in college; classmates study abroad all the time. Siblings, significant others and best friends constantly deal with distance. I do not think I am the first person to worry about a relationship shift. So until I can be the one packing my bags for a foreign country, (Buenos Aires, here I come) I will have to figure out a way to come to terms with circumstances out of my control, just like everyone else.

Animals are people, too

Last year Spain became the first country on Earth to extend legal rights to animals , granting the great apes (chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans) – humanity’s closest relatives – the right to life, individual freedom and prohibition of torture. The rest of the world should follow the lead of the Spanish but go a few steps further by including all highly intelligent animals, not just apes.

IU begins second round of campus budget cuts

IU has achieved $29.3 million in base budget cuts, but still must find another $58.9 million to cut in order to meet the requirement of the mandated state funding reduction, according to a Jan. 6 IU press release.
