Soccer team upsets No. 1 Virginia

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- The men's soccer entered halftime against Virginia, Sunday trailing 1-0 and facing its fourth consecutive deficit in a game after a first half. Coach Jerry Yeagley said he wasn't pleased with how his young players performed in the first 45 minutes against the veteran Cavaliers.

Jailed scientist makes plea bargain

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. ' Los Alamos scientist Wen Ho Lee, who was fired and jailed on charges of mishandling nuclear weapons secrets, has agreed to plead guilty to one charge and will cooperate with federal investigators, Justice Department sources said Sunday.

A fire at the Monroe County Republican headquarters Saturday is being investigated as an arson. Scott Smith, chief fire inspector for the Bloomington Fire Department, said as of Saturday there were no suspects in the case.

The women's soccer team closed out its non-conference schedule undefeated with wins against San Diego State and Utah State at home this weekend. The team goes into the Big Ten season as winners of five consecutive games, allowing one goal during the stretch.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. ' A men's soccer player and a coach joked after IU's 2-1 overtime win Friday against Maryland that when no one else can score a goal, just "dial 1-800-BACK."

Defense is offensive against North Carolina State

Everything was going according to plan. All the hype surrounding the football team before its season opener Saturday against North Carolina State seemed to be true. In two possessions, the Hoosiers' offense had easily posted two touchdowns ' the second of which was a 57-yard touchdown pass from junior quarterback Antwaan Randle El to senior receiver Jerry Dorsey.

New year, same results for football

During the offseason, the football team talked about how things were going to change in 2000. Coach Cam Cameron and his players talked about winning, not losing close games in the fourth quarter. They talked about how the defense would be one of the most improved groups in college football. They talked about how the Hoosiers would get off to a fast start this season.

Student support leans toward Knight

A white paper plate was pinned to the back of sophomore Jim Wisco's red "Indiana Hoosiers" T-shirt as he cheered for the IU football team Saturday. Wisco scribbled black letters on the plate showing his distaste (to put it tactfully) for freshman Kent Harvey. The pin attaching the plate to his shirt read, "Friends and fans of RMK."

Players meet with President Brand

The IU basketball team met with President Myles Brand at about 3:45 p.m. today to voice its support for coach Bob Knight, said junior guard Dane Fife. Knight, who was placed under a "zero-tolerance" sanction in May, is facing accusations that he cursed at and forcefully grabbed freshman Kent Harvey for disrespecting him Thursday afternoon. The IU Police Department is investigating the incident.

Coach Bob Knight sat in "the cave" of Assembly Hall, a room where he often spends hours reviewing game and practice tape, with his legs crossed and dark brows raised. He does a lot of thinking in that room, but Friday he seemed puzzled.
