On June 26, Indiana University announced in an IU Today release the appointment of Tom Froehle as the new vice president and general counsel. Froehle will begin his new position as chief legal officer on Aug. 17.
In this role, Froehle will oversee the offices of civil rights compliance, university compliance and internal audit. He will direct legal strategy for the university, manage university attorneys and counsel and advise senior leadership on matters of governance, policy development and risk management.
Froehle is the successor to Anthony Prather, IU’s vice president and general counsel since 2022.
“His leadership will serve our students, faculty, staff and partners well as we build on the tremendous momentum underway at Indiana University,” IU President Pamela Whitten said in the release.
Froehle has over 30 years of experience in advising various corporations, universities and government entities on legal, regulatory and financial matters. He has represented organizations such as Honda, the NCAA and United Airlines.
He is currently serving as chair emeritus and member of the board at Faegre Drinker law firm and has been with the firm since 2020.
“Tom brings the experience and judgment required to advise a complex public university in a rapidly changing environment,” Whitten said in the release.
He has served on the board of directors of the Indianapolis Bar Foundation, Indiana Repertory Theatre, Indiana Sports Corp and other civic organizations. Froehle was awarded the Indiana Lawyer’s Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025.
Throughout his career, Froehle has led multiple organizations through changes, including two major law firm mergers at Faegre Drinker. Froehle looks forward to advancing IU’s mission by providing legal guidance to the university.
“I’ve always believed the best outcomes come from strong teams working together with a shared commitment to excellence, which is why I’m particularly excited to join President Whitten and her leadership team,” Froehle said in the release.
Associate Vice President and Deputy General Counsel Andrea Newsom will serve as interim vice president and general counsel until the role is assumed by Froehle in August.
