Hoosiers finish 15th on the road

The final district tournament for the men's golf team was similar to the team's other performances this spring. IU finished 15th in the Fossum Invitational in East Lansing, Mich., this weekend with a three-round score of 917. Northwestern won the tournament with a record score of one-under-par 851. Once again, the Hoosiers started a tournament slowly as the team recorded a 312 in Saturday's opening round. IU improved by shooting a 300 in its second round, but faltered in the final found with a 305.

Team comes back to finish 2nd

After two rounds of the women's Big Ten golf tournament, IU sat second. After three rounds, the Hoosiers tumbled to fifth. But the shaky third round might have been the calm before the storm. It just set up a fantastic finish for the Hoosiers, as they fired a final-round 308 to streak to a second-place tie with Northwestern. Michigan State matched IU stroke for stroke in the fourth round to win the tournament with a four-round total of 1219. IU finished 11 shots back.

Team breaks records at Drake Relays

The men's track team said it knew the Drake Relays were going to present great competition. But rather than let the competition get them down, the Hoosiers excelled. Senior decathlete Brian Bowman began the Hoosier dominance with a fourth-place finish in the decathlon. Bowman was the top collegiate finisher in the event with a new career high and all-time school record of 7,123 points, eclipsing his 7,091-point performance April 15 at the Sea Ray Relays.

Bid to upset Illini busted

Illinois hadn't lost a Big Ten Conference game in more than 50 contests. The last time the Fighting Illini dropped a league game, IU dumped them. IU's attempt to put bookends on Illinois' winning streak fell short Friday at the Big Ten tournament, as Illinois (20-5, 11-0 Big Ten) bumped IU (14-8, 6-6) from the field with a 4-2 victory in Madison, Wisc. "The team definitely wanted the win, and they fought hard," head coach Ken Hydinger said. "But they just couldn't get it done."

Ad furthers the discussion about race

·

Any institution of learning should be a free marketplace of ideas. Unless students are exposed to different points of view, they cannot make independent decisions about which ideas are valuable and which have little merit. No doubt, the editors of the Indiana Daily Student believed they were furthering such a discussion when they decided to run the advertisement by David Horowitz entitled "Ten Reasons Why Reparations for Slavery is a Bad Idea -- and Racist Too." The ad's publication certainly has touched off a debate -- both about the content of the advertisement itself and about the decision to run it.

Is Bush the true American President?

·

Did you think I had forgotten about you, George? It's our hundred-day anniversary. After spending your first few weeks in office mining the newspapers for a definitive answer to the question, "What exactly is compassionate conservatism?" I decided to let you have your first hundred days to yourself. What the heck -- how much damage can the Return of Bush do? Was I naive, or what?

Make something of your four years

·

I started crying in the grocery store Saturday. While sorting out hot dogs and buns for a camp-out I was about to embark on, I was chatting with my best gal pal on my cell phone. I had been trying to convince her to come camping with me, and thought I had succeeded. But while I was picking out ketchup and mustard, she told me she had too much studying, housework and sleeping to do and wouldn't be able to come. And there in the condiment aisle, I realized that this terrific four-year rollercoaster ride is coming to an end, and I have less than a week to cram in as much quality time with my friends as possible. Sure, I'll keep in touch with them after graduation, maybe even come back to visit for a reunion next year. But life will never be like this again.

A semester to remember

Every semester, the editorial staff of the Indiana Daily Student changes. Today's paper is the last publication by the spring semester staff -- the summer staff steps up to bat next, and their first paper will hit the stands Friday. In the meantime, the IDS will take a break for some much-needed time to rest and gear up for finals, just like the rest of the campus.
