ISU student dies after collapsing at football game TERRE HAUTE -- An Indiana State University sophomore who collapsed during Thursday night's ISU football game while working as a volunteer has died at an Indianapolis hospital. Stephen Kennedy, 19, died Friday morning at Methodist Hospital after he was removed from life support.

House combats dog attacks

A House committee passed a bill that would hold dog owners responsible for dog attacks on their property that lead to serious injury or death. The law would apply only to persons carrying out duties required by law. The bill, authored by Sen. Vi Simpson, D-Ellettsville, was prompted by the death of a Brown County woman last June. Dorothy Stewart, a U.S. Census worker, was attacked and killed by a pack of dogs on the property of the dogs' owners.

Little 500 not all about riders

I will not defend everything he says -- for a lot of people the race is meaningful and important -- but let's remember the fans.

Deer Creek has changed its name to Verizon Wireless Music Center. Irvine Meadows in Irvine, Calif., was also renamed Verizon Wireless Music Center. I am confused. If I buy a ticket to see a show this summer at Verizon Wireless Music Center and I want to see it in Noblesville, Ind., how do I know I am getting the right ticket?

NRA, unload your guns

The Senate passed Senator John McCain's campaign finance reform legislation Monday, restricting the amount of money various individuals and groups would be allowed to donate as "soft money." This is good news. It is especially good news for those of us who favor increased gun control. Why? Because one group, the National Rifle Association, notorious for buying gun-friendly candidate's victories, will see its dark grip on national politics eased.

Demonstration accounts differ

A downtown bike-ride protest turned ugly Friday when a skirmish with police led to seven arrests. It's now uglier, with accusations flying on both sides. Police shut down Friday's "Critical Mass" bike ride -- a monthly event celebrating alternative modes of transportation -- for obstructing traffic along North Walnut Avenue.

Maya Angelou to visit IU

With more than 20 novels, 30 honorary degrees from universities across the country, and Emmy and Pulitzer Prize nominations, Maya Angelou's next project will be here in Bloomington. The novelist, poet, dancer and teacher will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, April 11 at the IU Auditorium. Tickets are free to all IU students, faculty, and staff and will be available at 10 a.m. Thursday.

Crew team battles windy conditions, altered courses Windy weather forced the crew team to deal with delayed and re-routed race courses at the Jayhawk Invitational in Lawrence, Kan., Saturday and Sunday. But the Hoosiers handled Mother Nature and the rest of the six-team field by capping off their weekend with a first-place finish in the novice four boat competition.

The Academy has some explaining to do

Archives preserve University history

Within the depths of Bryan Hall, covering five floors and 5,000 square feet, sits the history of IU in boxes, file cabinets and storage bins. This is the University Archives. The University Archives is the largest and most comprehensive source about and for IU. Records include everything from blueprints and news clippings to schedules and scrapbooks.

Miss-N-Out competition prepares riders for upcoming races

Phi Delta Theta senior Josh Beatty and Delta Chi senior Jason Sonneborn were riding a foot from each other with about 200 meters remaining in the final heat of the men's Miss-N-Out competition. As the riders approached turn three on the Bill Armstrong Stadium track, the two rider duel became a one man sprint to the finish.

Eco-demonstrations held to protest arrest

Two demonstrations in Bloomington this weekend kicked off a week of protest over the prosecution of local activist Frank Ambrose. Neither rally ended peacefully, and one ended with six people in jail. Friday, about 20 bicyclists rode down Kirkwood in protest. Bloomington Police Department Sgt. Bob Neely said about seven bicycle officers from the BPD and the IU Police Department were deployed to Kirkwood to maintain order and clear the way for vehicular traffic.
