Cheryl Munson

Munson is an expert of Native American cultures in the Midwest. She graduated with a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona in 1965 and a master’s degree from the University of Illinois in 1971. She ran unsuccessfully for the county council District 2 seat in 2010 and considered but chose not to run in 2012.

Lee Jones - County Council Democrat

Elizabeth “Lee” Jones

Jones and her husband founded Stranger’s Hill, an organic produce and greenhouse business, in 1983. Jones, who graduated from IU in 1976 with a degree in biology, previously worked as a lab technician, supervisor of animal laboratories in psychology experiments and a veterinary technician.


Brian Ellison - County Council Republican

Brian Ellison

Ellison, 43, is an 11-year resident of Monroe County. He has experience with large budget management through his position as a global projects manager for Hewlett-Packard, where he’s worked for 20 years.

Jennifer Mickel

Mickel spent much of her childhood in Blooomington, attending Rogers Elementary School, University Middle School and Bloomington North High School. She has lived in Monroe County for the last 10 years. She graduated from IU in 1986 with a degree in English and also studied at Fuller Theological Seminary and Oakland University. Mickel is a small business owner and entrepreneur designer, and is active in Citizens for Effective Justice.

Nelson R. Shaffer

Nelson Shaffer

Nelson Shaffer received his Ph.D. in applied geology from IU in 1996 and undergraduate and graduate degrees from Ohio University. He has also worked as the Indiana Academy of Science executive director and was president of IU’s Staff Council in 1990.


Julie Thomas

Julie Thomas

Thomas serves on several boards of directors, including the Monroe County Board of Zoning Appeals and Planned Parenthood of Indiana. She is a past president of Middle Way House and continues to volunteer as a victim’s advocate. She earned a Ph.D. in history and gender studies from IU in 2005.


John Newlin

John Newlin

Newlin, 61, has bachelor’s degrees from Miami University of Ohio and Indiana University. He has studied concrete, aggregate and cement design and received certifications from several institutions, including the University of Kentucky and IU-Purdue University Indianapolis.


Iris Kiesling

Iris Kiesling

Kiesling has an associate’s degree from the Katharine Gibbs School in Montclaire, N.J., and Boston. Kiesling had an active role in the League of Women Voters of Monroe County before serving on the Bloomington City Council.
