Truck bombs hit British consulate in worst terrorist blasts in Turkish history

ISTANBUL, Turkey -- Trucks packed with explosives blew up at a London-based bank and the British consulate Thursday, killing at least 27 people and wounding nearly 450. Security forces were put on highest alert after the blasts at the high-rise headquarters of the HSBC bank and the British consulate occurred five minutes apart at about 11 a.m.

Suicide bomber strikes U.S.-allied party in Iraq's Kurdish north

KIRKUK, Iraq -- A suicide truck bomb exploded at the office of a U.S.-allied Kurdish political party in this northern oil center Thursday, killing four bystanders and wounding about 30. It was the second car-bombing in as many days against Iraqis cooperating with the U.S.-led occupation. A pro-U.S. politician was assassinated in the southern city of Basra, his party said Thursday.

Health Center raises funds for ill friend

When IU Health Center employee Trent Whitaker heard from his doctor that he was "cancer free as of now," he said he felt overjoyed. His battle with sinus cancer was almost through. Now, he has to go through an MRI to see if he can move on with his life. "It's like I'm in my finals right now," he said. "Hopefully, I'll be able to beat this."

Journalism professor to be honored

Dr. Jack Dvorak, journalism professor at IU and director of the High School Journalism Institute, will accept the prestigious Carl Talley Distinguished Service Award Saturday in Washington, D.C. According to the Journalism Education Association Web site, the Carl Talley Distinguished Service Award is JEA's highest honor and is presented to a JEA member whose work is unusually beneficial and of superior value to the national JEA and to scholastic journalism.

INPIRG works on recycling campaign

The Indiana Public Interest Research Group, a student activist group on campus, is currently working on its annual recycling campaign. INPIRG is working to get recycling programs for off-campus apartment complexes.

Extend the Inter-tax ban

The U.S. Senate is holding up the renewal of the federal ban on Internet access taxes. The Internet Tax Non-Discrimination Act, originally passed by Congress in 1998, has prevented taxation of Internet access as well as discriminatory taxes that single out Internet sales or use.

Films, TV shows and sometimes books influence fashion. Characters in movies or on TV shows often inspire us to dress a certain way. Sometimes the character may be a role model, like Mary Tyler Moore, or influence a certain way of dress, like Don Johnson in "Miami Vice." The way characters dress can tell you a lot about them before they even say their lines.

Council passes new legislation

The Bloomington City Council has approved a $200,000 proposal made by the city's Parking Enforcement Division for an automated parking enforcement system at the new Regester Parking Garage, located downtown at the corner of 7th St. and College Ave.

Just four days prior to a Nov. 11 City-County Council vote on a plan to eliminate smoking from most public and work environments, one Indianapolis west side restaurant jumped the gun and established its own ban.

Cooking series gains popularity

The Asian Culture Center will transform its lounge into a cooking show with the third of its monthly recipe exchange and cooking demonstration series at 5 p.m. tonight at 807 E. 10th St. Senior Joon Gang Ko and Bloomington resident Hee Chung Yang will show the audience how to make several Korean dishes.

Bloomington music legend dies at 53

The Bloomington music scene lost one of its greatest contributors when Tom Donahue passed away Wednesday from complications from liver cancer. He would have been 54 next week. Donahue had been a staple of the Bloomington music scene for more than 25 years, working in several music stores, and finally settling as owner of TD's CDs & LPs on Kirkwood Avenue.

Committee meets to discuss city's Park and Ride program

The City of Bloomington's Planning Department held its final public meeting Wednesday regarding the Park and Ride program. The meeting was held to share survey results on the usage of the program and open the floor for suggestions before the staff makes final recommendations on the changes to be implemented in the service.

For much of her professional career, history professor Emma Lou Thornbrough has been interested in black history. As a result of her research, Thornbrough published "Indiana Blacks in the Twentieth Century" in 2000.
