After 2 losses, focus shifts to Big Tens

·

The IU wrestling team dropped its final two matches of the regular season this weekend and will now prepare for the Big Ten Tournament. Five Hoosiers took victories Friday during a 19-15 loss at No. 13 Northwestern. While they lost, IU coach Duane Goldman said he was happy with a lot of the things that he saw in some of the individual matches.

Hot bats don't help as season begins

·

Neither cold weather nor University of Oklahoma pitching could cool down the Hoosier bats as the IU women's softball team opened its season at the OU/Nike Classic on Friday.

Team competes with Olympian Saturday

·

The IU men's track and field team closed out its indoor season this weekend at the Hoosier Hills Invitational. The event signified the squad's final competitive preparation before postseason action begins next week at the Big Ten Championships. Posting nine top-five finishes and nine personal bests, the Hoosiers got a final tune-up before next week's larger stage.

Hoosiers set school record

·

The Hoosier contingent of juniors Annica Lofstedt, Clarissa Wentworth, Leila Vaziri and freshman Allison Kay set a school record in the 400-yard freestyle relay on the final day of the Big Ten Championships as the No. 16 IU women's swimming and diving team closed out the 2006 Big Ten Championships in fourth place in Columbus, Ohio, this weekend.

Hoosiers upset No. 10 Purdue in overtime

·

WEST LAFAYETTE -- With less than 10 seconds remaining in regulation Sunday, Purdue had victory in its grasp. Seconds later, IU senior guard Cyndi Valentin yanked it away. Valentin knocked down a 3-pointer with five seconds left in regulation to force overtime. She rose to the occasion again in the extra session, connecting on a pair of free throws with three seconds to go to give IU (15-10, 9-5) a 63-61 upset of No. 10 Purdue at Mackey Arena.

Worriers

·

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. -- With Sunday's loss at Illinois, the Hoosiers are just two road games away from a feat that hasn't been accomplished since 1970. If IU loses in the remaining two road contests, it would be the first time since the 1969-70 season the Hoosiers have gone winless on the road in conference play. Against Illinois, the story of missed layups, lack of presence on the boards and poor shot selection was a familiar one as the Hoosiers dropped another game, 70-58.

Students take part in 'international' workshop

·

Instead of partying and sleeping in, 27 students chose to discuss pressing international issues last Friday night and Saturday morning. Gathered at round tables, the students had forsaken their friends and their beds to take part in a conference co-sponsored by the Hutton Honors College and the Wells Scholars Program called, "The View from Abroad: An Undergraduate Workshop on the Role and Image of the United States in the World."

Ticket deride

·

A quick review of the platforms of this year's IU Student Association executive tickets reveals a couple interesting planks -- Red Hot's idea to install countdown screens at bus stops, and Hoosier's idea to subscribe the student body to a digital media at a nominal fee.

Bowlers to knock pins for fundraiser

·

IU superheroes will take over Suburban Lanes two nights this week. Big Brothers Big Sisters will hold this year's superhero-themed Bowl for Kids' Sake IU Bowl fundraiser the evenings of Feb. 22 and 23. Revenue from the event supports about one-third of the organization's operating budget, said Renee Tetrick, an IU student and BBBS intern. Last year, the IU Bowl raised $20,000, and this year the organization's goal is $32,000.

Native Indiana birds counted at state park

·

CLARKSVILLE, Ind. -- Even in below freezing temperatures, some local wildlife brave the Indiana weather without flying south for the winter. The Knob & Valley Audubon Society of New Albany, Ind., teamed up with local residents Saturday on a hike in Falls of the Ohio, a state park located in Clarksville, Ind., to count winter birds. The event was held in conjunction with the National Audubon Society's annual Backyard Bird Count held every February.

Undergrads launch journal

·

The story behind the making of Law and Disorder is worthy of its own TV show. "(The idea to produce the journal) came to me in a dream," said Theresa Ochoa, IU professor of special education. "I woke up and it came to me: Law and Disorder."

Small crowd for Mardi Gras parades

·

NEW ORLEANS -- The first of the major Mardi Gras parades with marching bands, brightly decorated floats and flying plastic beads rolled down New Orleans' streets Saturday, greeted by small but celebratory crowds. Despite the widespread destruction from Hurricane Katrina, officials decided to allow a scaled-back Mardi Gras celebration this year. New Orleans parades, put on by private groups, were restricted to one corridor to help cut the cost of police protection and trash pickup.

ACE program seeks funds

·

Since its inception in 2000, the Advocates for Community Engagement (ACE) program at IU has become a replicable model for service-learning programs as far away as Ireland and Central Asia and as close as Indiana's Butler University. However, the end of a four-year grant from the Lumina Foundation at the close of this school year has sent the program searching for additional funding.

Bloomington Community Band seeks percussionist

·

The Bloomington Community Band, an all-adult volunteer band, has an opening for a percussionist. The band, which has about 50 members, plays about 20 concerts a year at civic events and public gatherings in Monroe County and surrounding areas. The band always welcomes new members, but it particularly needs a percussionist who can read music.
