Hoosiers to face state rival in series

A well-rested hockey team, now with its all-time leading scorer back in the fold, will face off against Purdue in a conference home-and-home series this weekend. The action begins tonight at Purdue's home ice in Fishers before coming to Bloomington at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Frank Southern Center, 1965 S. Henderson Ave.

Team seeks redemption

A year ago, IU was embarrassed at Assembly Hall by then-No. 6 Penn State. The Hoosiers were outplayed in every facet of the game by the Big Ten's best team that season. In the 74-36 drubbing -- by far the worst performance of the year -- the Hoosiers shot an abysmal 21 percent from the floor and were outscored by 32 points in the second half.

Women rebound from loss

Minnesota stayed competitive with the women's basketball team Thursday, matching basket for basket with only a minute left. But they were already down by 10. And it was only the first half.

IU takes control

A different women's basketball team took the floor in Thursday night's win against Minnesota (7-8, 0-4 Big Ten). The Assembly Hall crowd was on its feet cheering the Hoosiers, as they routed the Golden Gophers, 92-64.

Hoosiers face Gophers in rematch

The faces are familiar. The match-ups won't change much. And the Hoosiers and coach Kathi Bennett, hope the result won't change, either. IU looks to complete the season sweep of Minnesota at 7:30 p.m. today in Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers held off the Gophers 79-76 a week ago in Minneapolis.

Hoosier lineup changes

Brad Lutsch, the hockey team's all-time leading scorer, made his return to the Frank Southern Center ice January 19, 1999, against Purdue University. In a Hollywood-style climax to his already incredible collegiate career, Lutsch netted a hat trick. Midway through the second period, hit a Purdue player so hard the helpless Boilermaker shattered the glass board and ended up in the second row of the bleachers.

Olympic diver comes home

After competing in the Sydney Summer Olympics in September, junior diver Sara Reiling said she is glad to be back home. "I want to find all my friends," she said. "I missed them." Although Reiling has been redshirted this season because of an injury and her late return to the program, she is still training for the future. Reiling said she hopes to be ready to compete in the Senior Nationals in April. Summer competition looms as a last resort. "I'm just trying to keep an open mind," she said. "I had surgery (on my wrist) in November, so hopefully I'll get back in shape from that."

Hoosiers' momentum sputters in loss

Two days after knocking off No. 1 Michigan State, the Hoosiers lost to unranked Michigan 70-64. Freshman forward Jared Jeffries scored 15 points to lead the Hoosiers. Junior forward Kirk Haston added 13 while freshman guard Andre Owens scored 10.

Fife not welcome on Michigan turf

With four seconds remaining on the game clock against Michigan Tuesday night, Tom Coverdale passed the ball outside to Kirk Haston. It was the same play IU used in Sunday's game against Michigan State. Haston took a look at the basket and shot the ball -- but this time, it bounced around the rim a few times before falling to the floor. The shot was no good.

Purdue All-American battles concussion

Purdue senior small forward Katie Douglas' head was probably still spinning Sunday when her team played IU. Just three days removed from a mild concussion suffered during her team's win against Iowa, Douglas was groggy, dizzy and hurting when she took the Assembly Hall floor.

Hoosiers look to keep momentum

After a nail-biting win against No. 1-ranked Michigan State Sunday, the Hoosiers hit an emotional high. Now, interim head coach Mike Davis said he needs the team to come down immediately and focus on Michigan, 7 p.m. today in Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. Davis has his mind set on a winning season, and he said defeating Michigan is the next step.

Comeback try ends up short

Coming into Sunday's home game against sixth-ranked Purdue, the women's basketball team was white hot. After two consecutive losing seasons, it stood atop the Big Ten. The Hoosiers' only losses came at the hands of undefeated Ole Miss and perennial powerhouse Louisiana Tech, which was ranked eighth at the time.

Wrestlers poised for intense conference play

At 5-0, IU wrestlers have their best team start since 1995-96, but the competition will intensify as conference play approaches. Following a victory against Missouri, the Hoosiers have dominated their opponents to maintain an undefeated dual meet record. The last time the Hoosiers posted a 5-0 record, the team finished as Big Ten runner-up. Saturday in Charleston, Ill., Indiana defeated Eastern Illinois 37-9 and Franklin and Marshall 47-9. In the tri-match, three Hoosiers pinned both of their opponents, including senior Gabe Cook (149 pounds) who improved to 12-2 on the year. Junior Viktor Sveda (184) earned his seventh and eighth pins to move to 14-4. Redshirt freshman Coyte Cooper's two pins make him 8-4 overall with four pins.

Hoosiers cruise past competition in home meets

Members of the men's swimming and diving teams came back to Bloomington early to compete in the Counsilman Billingsley Aquatic Center. The men's swim team finished with a 151-90 victory against Cincinnati, while the diving team fell short to Ohio State.

Hoosiers topple No. 1 Spartans

Thousands of fans -- many of them IU students -- stood in the bleachers screaming and waiting for the final 8.3 seconds of Sunday's game. Going into the final time out, IU was down by two, 58-56. Security guards and ushers held yellow ropes across the baseline to prevent fans from storming the court.

Coach reinvents team

When coach Kathi Bennett took over the women's basketball program last spring, athletics director Clarence Doninger expected a turnaround. Just not so fast. In only 14 games in her first season, Bennett has transformed a bottom-dweller in the Big Ten to one of the conference's best. While campus was empty last month, IU has continued to enact tough defense on its opponents, sprinting to a 12-2 start.

Hoosiers denied 6th NCAA title

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Creighton lost its battle with the left post on the north goal Friday at Ericsson Stadium, but the loss mattered little. For the post couldn't have advanced to the national championship match with a victory. And Creighton came back to beat the Hoosiers 2-1 in triple overtime to advance to its first College Cup championship.

Hoosiers hold off Valpo

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Tom Coverdale saved his best for last, saving the perfect record of Indiana in its Hoosier Classic. Coverdale scored nine of his 17 points in the final seven minutes as Indiana held off Valparaiso 63-60 in Friday night\'s championship game of the 19th Hoosier Classic.

33.3% shooting dooms Hoosiers

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (AP) - Missouri did exactly what it needed to Monday night -- it played tough, hard-nosed, in-your-face defense. And Indiana had no answer. The Tigers limited the Hoosiers to 33.3 percent shooting and walked away with a 68-63 victory -- their first in Bloomington since 1962.
