Defensive intensity helps out offense

Prior to Sunday's game against No.15 Minnesota, the IU women's basketball team needed to furiously defend and not let the Golden Gophers attempt easy shots. The Hoosiers (9-11, 2-8 Big Ten) carried that insistent demeanor over to offense, as they continuously drove to and attacked the basket at Assembly Hall.

Freshman player decides to transfer

It may not have been too hard to read Daryl Pegram's unhappiness. With just two early season game appearances for the IU men's basketball team to his credit, the freshman forward spent the last couple of months on the bench, dressed in street clothes.

Hoosiers drop ball at home against Spartans

Saturday night brought some welcome change for the Hoosiers. For the first time in four games, cheers were aimed in their direction as they took the court and, behind that supportive crowd, played with more energy and intensity than they displayed during their four game road trip.

A Special Success

It was a balmy 16 degrees outside and a line of scantily-clad divers was forming in front of a pool and over 100 spectators. Led by IU junior Brad Snyder, wearing a Cow costume and a multi-colored clown wig, more than 20 people went for a swim into the icy pool for the aptly-named "Polar Bear Plunge." This sort of crazy activity ran rampant throughout the 2003 Spirit of Sport.

Upset bid falls short for women

It was a game that showed the IU women's basketball team's (9-11, 2-8) spirit, their drive and determination to come out with a victory in the Big Ten. But when things didn't go their way in the last seconds of the game, the Hoosiers fell to No. 15 Minnesota (17-4, 6-4) 59-56.

Wrestlers revved up for regional rival

The Hoosier wrestling team returned, winless, from a road trip to No. 4 Ohio State and No. 10 Michigan last week. This pushed the Hoosiers' Big Ten record to 0-3. But coach Duane Goldman still is not worried.

Indiana Invitational promises top talent

Today kicks off the No. 17 men's track and field team's first home meet of the season. The Indiana Invitational is a two day meet beginning this afternoon at 4 p.m. and resuming tomorrow at noon. So far this season, the team has faced only dual meet competition. The team dominated their last meet at Illinois last weekend to give them some momentum entering the meet today. Though no team score will be kept, this will be the team's first taste of a big meet atmosphere this season.

Arizona biggest test for Hoosiers

Thursday night, the No. 3 IU men's club volleyball team boarded the plane toward Arizona for their first out of region tournament of the season. The team will play an exhibition against Arizona on Friday before the actual tournament starts in which Arizona will be participating as well. The common consensus between the players, senior Jeremy Levy and junior JT Gripe, as well as coach Ryan Theis, is that playing the No. 1 ranked Arizona will be the team's biggest challenge.

IU pressing on despite hard times

The news hasn't been good for the Hoosiers lately. IU struggled in back to back defeats against No. 4 Duke and Wake Forest last weekend, and they may have lost senior No. 1 singles and doubles player Karie Schlukebir for the season due to undisclosed circumstances.

Water polo team heads west for tournament

Coming off a successful tournament in Michigan two weeks ago, the No. 13 women's water polo team is looking to replicate that success this weekend. The Hoosiers will be in Palo Alto, Calif. from Feb. 8-9 competing in the Stanford Invitational. The Michigan Invitational provided tough competition for the Hoosier women, but this weekend will be especially competitive.

Men's tennis to host Louisville IU men's tennis team looks to continue their hot start this weekend when they host No. 37 Louisville Cardinals today at 5:30 p.m. at the IU Tennis Center. The Hoosiers will follow that match with another dual meet tomorrow at 3 p.m. against the Memphis Tigers.

Swimmers prepared for final tune-up before Big Tens

IU hosts ranked Big Ten rival

Things do not get any easier for the IU women's basketball team. After a game at No. 14 Penn State last Sunday, the Hoosiers (9-10, 2-7 Big Ten) return home to host No. 15 Minnesota this Sunday at 1 p.m. at Assembly Hall. "This is a really big game," IU coach Kathi Bennett said. "It's one of the biggest ones of the season. We want to pick up a victory and have to play at a high level of energy if we want to be successful."

Hoosiers eager to be home

Junior sprinter elevates for race

Saturday at a four-way meet in Illinois, the No. 16 men's track and field team's top 400-meter runner, junior Ryan Sarbinoff, came up with an injured hamstring during warm ups. This left his training partner, junior Dan Martin, as the top 400-meter runner.

Senior leads by example

Senior Rachelle Boone hasn't always been known for her 60- and 200-meter performances. Until high school, Boone's sport of choice was soccer. Her teammates urged her to try running track, and she immediately caught the coach's attention.
