IU closes out season on 10-match losing streak

The IU volleyball team wrapped up its season with a pair of losses at the hands of the Northwestern Wildcats and the No. 14 Wisconsin Badgers this weekend, ending the season on a 10-match losing streak to finish 2-18 in Big Ten play and 9-23 on the season. The Hoosiers looked to avoid the season sweep in Friday's match against Northwestern but came up short, falling to the Wildcats 3-1 (30-25, 35-33, 23-30, 30-27).

Sheer 'Drudge'ry

It isn't because of the site's analysis or writing -- there's hardly any of either. Hoosiers score 179 points, take 1st at Mat Town Invitational

Senior Joe Dubuque began the defense of his National Championship title Saturday with an individual title in the 125-pound division at the Mat Town Invitational in Lock Haven, Pa. Junior Matt Cooper and sophomore Brandon Becker each also came away with titles in the 149- and 157-pound divisions for the Hoosiers. A total of 13 Hoosiers placed in the event, leading No. 16 IU to a first place finish in the tournament.

Women fall to 1-3 with losses to Irish, Bowling Green

The IU women's basketball team fell to 1-3 for the season during Thanksgiving break -- dropping two of three games. During the first contest, against No. 15 Notre Dame Wednesday at Assembly Hall, IU played solid defense and senior guard Jenny DeMuth led the team in scoring with 20 points, but the Hoosiers fell to the Irish 74-61. Trailing by nine late in the first half, the Hoosiers went on a 7-0 run to enter the locker room. With 13 minutes remaining in the game, IU claimed its first lead since the opening minutes of the game.

'Rent' reflections

To be corny, things have changed a lot since I was in high school. Back then, the only kids who admitted loving the musical "Rent" were either in the theater club or gay (and oftentimes, both). But when I went to see the movie on opening night, the theater was packed with "normal" high school kids, their parents and even one group that had been singing church songs outside. And when it was over, everyone was crying.

Outside shooting pushes IU past Florida A&M

The Hoosiers are looking to beat opponents on the inside this year, but they showed that wasn't a necessity in their 100-63 routing of Florida A&M Monday night at Assembly Hall. With senior forward Marco Killingsworth blanketed by a thick zone all night, IU's perimeter players responded, hitting 16 three-pointers -- one shy of the school record set against Illinois in January 2003.

Third time no lucky charm for IU in NCAA tourney

There will be no three-peat for the IU men's soccer team. Not only did the No. 3 Hoosiers' season end while the final seconds ticked off the scoreboard in a 2-0 loss to Notre Dame last Tuesday, so did IU's 10-game NCAA tournament winning streak.

Irish end Hoosier 3-peat hopes

The IU men's soccer team bowed out of the NCAA tournament with a 2-0 loss against in-state rival Notre Dame Tuesday night. "Soccer is an honest game," IU coach Mike Freitag said. "It is a cruel game at times, but an honest game. I thought tonight we played a very good opponent who worked hard. I thought my team played well, but not well enough to win."

Defining victory

I can't tell you what "victory" in Iraq is supposed to look like. I opposed this war when it was only a bad idea and still oppose it now that it has become a nightmarish reality. But I, like virtually all Americans, don't want to see the United States lose. However, what does that mean if I can't even define what it means for us to win?

IDS votes 'no' on resolution to review Herbert

Schwarzenegger considers freeing Crips founder

SAN FRANCISCO -- Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said Friday he would consider granting clemency to convicted killer Stanley Tookie Williams, the Crips gang founder who became an anti-gang activist while in prison and was nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. The governor said he would meet Dec. 8 in a private hearing with Williams' lawyers, Los Angeles County prosecutors and others involved.

Sunni Arabs arrested in plot to kill Saddam Hussein's judge

Will Saddam's foreign lawyers, including former U.S. Attorney General Ramsey Clark, be allowed to attend the trial?

Earthquake in Iran destroys villages, kills 10

TEHRAN, Iran -- An earthquake with a magnitude of at least 5.9 shook a sparsely populated area of southern Iran on Sunday, flattening seven villages, killing 10 people and injuring 70, officials and state-run television said. The temblor was felt as far away as Oman and the United Arab Emirates.

Purdue student's wife could be prosecuted for murder

LAFAYETTE -- A Purdue University graduate student's wife likely will be prosecuted in China on charges she killed her husband in Indiana and then used his passport to enter the Asian country. Whether Danlei Chen, 28, is tried in China for the death of her husband, Lei He, 28, hinges on the results of a psychological examination requested by her attorney, a Chinese public security official said. She currently is being held in Shanghai, China.

Time zone decision could renew debate

INDIANAPOLIS -- The decades-long debate about how Indiana sets its clocks will see its next jolt when a federal agency decides in the coming weeks whether it will redraw the state's time-zone line. That decision is to come about the same time as when state lawmakers start their new session -- and provide ammunition for those who want to reopen the time argument that has continued since a bill to adopt statewide daylight-saving time passed by one vote in April.

Renowned opera singer, former IU professor dies at 80

James King, an American tenor whose vibrant, powerful voice made him a favorite in leading roles on opera stages around the world during the 1960s and '70s, died of a heart attack Sunday. He was 80. King, who later became a music professor at IU, died in Naples, Fla., a school official said.

Judge hands Gooldy 40-year sentence for crash

A judge on Tuesday sentenced the driver in a crash that killed a teacher to 40 years in prison. Bryan Gooldy, 46, admitted in court last month that he was under the influence of drugs when the collision occurred in November 2004. Right before his trial, he pleaded guilty to driving under the influence of drugs causing death and being a habitual offender. Police said Gooldy tested positive for cocaine, opiates and depressants after his vehicle swerved into oncoming traffic on a Bloomington street, killing IU alumna Kate Comiskey, a 24-year-old English teacher at Indian Creek High School, in a head-on collision.

British painter uses Kate Moss in series of works

LONDON -- Kate Moss is the subject of four paintings by Stella Vine now on show at a London exhibit, including one based on a tabloid photo that allegedly shows her preparing a line of cocaine. A portrait titled, "Must Be the Season of the Witch," is based on a photo of the 31-year-old supermodel that was published in a London tabloid in September. Vine said Friday she usually bases her work on press photos.

French aid strengthens Louisiana ties

NEW ORLEANS -- France has offered to fly over some of the city's musicians and provide them with rent-free residences and monthly stipends for up to three months, in hopes of compensating for concerts canceled after Hurricane Katrina. Major French museums -- including the Louvre, the Musee d'Orsay and the Centre Pompidou -- also intend to help the New Orleans Museum of Art put on an exhibit of major French artists, probably in 2007.
