The story is all too familiar for IU football this season: an early lead, a failure to capitalize on opportunities and a second-half struggle. Saturday’s game against Penn State was no different.
Indiana at Penn State
For the third straight week, there are plenty of predictions available across the Internet for Saturday's game. And for the third straight week, most of them favor Penn State. Does IU even have a chance to win tomorrow? I picked up a copy of the USA Today to read on the way to State College, and the paper listed Penn State as 25-point favorites.
Late in the second quarter against Wisconsin, IU’s offense was struggling with only 55 yards the entire half. So it turned to a group that’s paced the offense all season – the wide receivers.
Which coach has a higher base salary - Bill Lynch or Nick Saban?
As usual, IU coach Bill Lynch spoke to the media this afternoon. Here are some highlights.
NOTE: I will post a recap of Bill Lynch's press conference later. I wanted to post an injury update now - I'll recap what Lynch had to say once I'm free this afternoon.
Did IU score one more touchdown than they should have on Saturday? I just saw a link to this story - Wisconsin coach Bret Bielema is asking the Big Ten to review wide receiver David Gilreath's muffed punt in the first quarter that IU safety Collin Taylor recovered.
IU released its depth chart today, and running back Darius Willis is listed as the starter. Willis, who injured his leg against Wisconsin and did not return to the game, has been hobbled by various injuries all season. Backup Bryan Payton filled in for Willis in the second half.
The state of the Big Ten took a big hit this week. Penn State did not look like a BCS contender, and Iowa was exposed as soon as Ricky Stanzi went down. By default, Ohio State (which had already played its way out of any sort of national prominence with losses to USC and Purdue) slides into the top spot and in position for the Rose Bowl. Wisconsin is probably doing too little, too late having lost key games to Ohio State and Iowa.
From IU media relations:
Saturday’s football game at Memorial Stadium provided a different storyline for the Hoosiers.
I thought I'd leave two stats for the day. A little bit random, but I think they are blog post worthy. Obviously, there will be more coverage coming of the IU-Wisconsin game (see game recap here).
After two weeks of giving up leads in the fourth quarter, IU played the comeback role today. But it wasn't enough.
John Clay just keeps running. And running.
Wisconsin at Indiana
Once again with IU facing a ranked opponent, it's a little bit easier to find media outlets predicting the score of Saturday's game. Here's what they had to say.
John Clay, the big, bruising 248-pound Badger running back who anchors the Wisconsin offense, averages 104.9 rushing yards per game and has scored 10 touchdowns – four more than any other running back in the Big Ten.
