What we learned from opening weekend

Two losses, one win. What do those results say about the IU baseball team? Given that it was the first weekend of the season (and that Kevin and I didn't have the wherewithal to travel to Myrtle Beach and cover the Hoosiers in person), it's difficult to determine that with a great deal of certainty. However, a few things stick out after following how IU fared in the season-opening Caravelle Resort Invitational. Offense is off to a slow start.

Igel recognized for Sunday performance

Matt Igel apparently turned some heads Sunday in Myrtle Beach, S.C. The junior reliever on Tuesday was selected as a semifinalist for CollegeBaseball360's "Primetime Pitcher of the Week" award for his work into extras in IU's 16-inning victory against No.

Sheehey's slam Dunk of the Year nominee

There must be something in the water in Assembly Hall. Junior forward Tom Pritchard's put-back monster was already nominated for Dunk of the Year by Intersport and CBS Sports, and now freshman forward Will Sheehey has been added to the bill. For this dunk in the Hoosiers' loss to Iowa, Sheehey has been added to the lists of finalists for week seven.

IU women earn third straight Big Ten Championship by incredible margin

Not many things can make Athletic Director Fred Glass jump in a pool with his clothes on. Now, those in attendance at the Big Ten Championships know one of them: the IU women winning an impressive third straight Big Ten Championship. They didn't just win the championship; they absolutely annihilated any doubt that they were the best team in the Big Ten.

Northwestern escapes, downs IU 70-64

For IU, the line between rest and rust was thin. The Hoosiers, playing their first game in exactly one week, opened cold on both ends of the floor and couldn't climb out of a 10-point halftime deficit in a 70-64 loss to Northwestern on Saturday in Assembly Hall. IU fought back with another valiant second-half effort, even tying the game at 52 after a one-handed slam from sophomore forward Derek Elston with 8:20 remaining.

IU opens season with 4-2 loss to Virginia Tech

The end result: The IU baseball team suffered a season-opening 4-2 defeat Friday at the hands of Virginia Tech in the Caravelle Resort Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. How it happened: Leading 1-0 in the bottom of the third inning, junior pitcher Drew Leininger allowed Virginia Tech first baseman Ronnie Shaban to bat in Johnny Morales on a grounder and then surrendered a run on one of Leininger's two wild pitches in the frame.

Student effort utilizes Twitter for game chants

Twitter is a funny thing. It's been used to tell college students about laundry room availability, to tell stories (one agonizing tweet at a time), and to target former teammates (more or less). But for IU sophomores Tony Adragna and Zach Litzelswope, they've got another idea for the social networking service: use it to create chants for the student section at Assembly Hall. The two sophomores started the Hysterical Hoosiers group this week, and the two-day-old twitter profile is already close to 500 followers. Adragna said the goal is to cater chants for each opponent.

Strumbel gets Hoosiers off to fast start at Big Ten Championships

With a fifth place finish in the 200-yard medley relay to begin the meet and a win in the 800-yard freestyle relay, the IU women are tied at 68 with Wisconsin for the lead with Minnesota just two points behind after the brief Day 1 action in Bloomington. IU junior Brittany Strumbel swam the first leg of the 800 freestyle relay in 1:43.93, the fastest time in Big Ten, Big Ten Championship, IU and Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center history.

Smith, teammates on freshman pitcher DeNato

It sure has felt like baseball season outside this week, and while we won't be seeing the IU baseball team at Sembower Field until late March, the Hoosiers will get things going this weekend with three games in the Caravelle Resort Invitational in Myrtle Beach, S.C. As I wrote in the IDS following baseball media day last week, the opening-weekend rotation appears set.

IU statistics in Big Ten: home vs. road

The IU basketball team is 12-3 at Assembly Hall this season, and 0-11 away from it. What happens when the team leaves Bloomington that makes it so tough for the Hoosiers to win? Here's a look at the home and road statistics from Big Ten games, since many lesser non-conference opponents padded IU statistics (especially at Assembly Hall). Basic statistics In Big Ten play, IU is 3-3 at home and 0-7 on the road.

The Hoosiers have an 11 point lead over No. 23 Penn State at the half. Hope Elam drained a three-point field goal with two seconds left in the half to get the score to 43-32. IU has been solid both offensively and defensively.

McClain, Hulls talk about matchup against Michigan

IU assistant coach Steve McClain and sophomore guard Jordan Hulls spoke to the media this afternoon about their matchup against Michigan in Ann Arbor tomorrow. Here's the full audio from McClain and Hulls. A few main points to take away: - IU sophomore forward Christian Watford's status is still up in the air.
