Have you noticed how it has been unreasonably cold of late for early April? Well, the Hoosiers certainly have this week.
Today's game against Ball State, as you might have guessed, was canceled because of the torrential downpours that hit Bloomington and Muncie this afternoon. As of now, they have not rescheduled the matchup.
With weather expected to deteriorate by Wednesday's scheduled game time, IU's game at Ball State has been moved to today at 3 p.m. Be sure to check today's IDS for a preview of today's contest with the Cardinals, and for a photo slideshow of this weekend's games with Michigan State.
We reported a while back that junior pitcher Chris McCombs would undergo Tommy John surgery after suffering another elbow injury (he also had Tommy John in high school). As it turns out, that may not be the case. We were told this weekend that after receiving a second and third opinion, McCombs may have suffered a less-severe injury and could be available in the next couple of weeks. In this scenario he would see limited action on a pitch count and begin to build up his endurance again while minimizing the risk of another injury. We'll post more once we have more definitive information, but for now it seems like a touch-and-go sort of injury.
Well, after watching this weekend's Big Ten-opening series and talking with IU coach Tracy Smith, I can't get the Rolling Stones song "Sympathy for the Devil" out of my head. Stay with me here. After losing both games of Saturday's double header, Smith had this to say: "This league is too good to rely on talent alone," he said.
Make that three losses in a row. The Hoosiers fell today 6-1 against the Spartans as IU's offense was never able to generate enough hits.
After gaining momentum with a walk-off win Friday to kick off Big Ten season, the Hoosiers went backwards Saturday, dropping both games of a doubleheader against Michigan State. "Michigan State was much more competitive in the box today," IU coach Tracy Smith said.
Just got back from the track from an beautiful day at the track watching Miss-n-Out. Both the men's and the women's races had exciting finishes. On the women's side, Teter's Sarah Rieke won her second consecutive spring series event after winning the ITT's on Wednesday.
In dramatic fashion, the Hoosiers kicked off the Big Ten season on a high note with a 2-1 win over Michigan State today.
So, it's the Thursday between ITTs and Miss-N-Out, which is Saturday. By this time, you guys probably forget what Bill Armstrong Stadium looks like. Fear not, faithful reader, this video of Phi Psi's qualification will surely lift your spirits. [youtube=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox-efde1-x4]
Because of the thunderstorms that have been rumbling through the Ohio Valley overnight and into today, IU's game in Cincinnati against Xavier today has been cancelled. The game will not be rescheduled. The Hoosiers return to the field Friday at Sembower Field here in Bloomington for the Big Ten opener against Michigan State. We'll update later with some preview stuff for this weekend's four-game set.
I wrote about D.J. testing the NBA waters in today's edition of the IDS. One thing I didn't have room for in the column was talking about how White would fit into the team next year.
Interesting activity on Pedals and Spokes today. Former Acacia and Kappa Alpha Theta coach (and multiple Little 500 champion coach) Tom Schwoegler might be joining the coaching crew for Team Major Taylor.
After a weekend sweep of in-state opponent IPFW, you'd expect IU coach Tracy Smith to be a pretty happy guy.
Looking back at Quals, I can't help but think it was such a crazy day. First, IUSF announces they will allow alumni coaches in the pits on race day, then Courtney Bishop coaches Team Major Taylor during their qual attempt.
Playing at home seems to agree with the Hoosiers. They're a perfect 3-0 at Sembower Field this season after completing a two-game sweep of IPFW this weekend.
Today was a second straight day of big news for Little 500. Phi Kappa Psi captured the men's pole and Teter won the pole for the women.
Combining strong pitching and a move the runner over mentality, the Hoosiers claimed their second home win of the season today with a final score of 6-3 over IPFW. After giving up a first inning run to the Mastodons, sophomore starter Tyler Tufts settled down on the mound.
Just got an e-mail from IUSF Director Jenny Bruffey. Alumni coaches will be allowed in the pits on race day.
