Phegley earns more All-American honors, plays well for USA

I don't know how many institutions put out All-American awards, but we will be able to figure out the number soon because Josh Phegley will have been on them all. This honor comes via the American Baseball Coaches Association. Also, to update Phegley's play with the USA National Team -- Josh is still with the team, but more catchers have arrived and have seriously cut-down into the Indiana catcher's playing time. Josh did not play in the most recent game, but did play on June 14.

NCAA Hearing Update

We were unable to fly out to Seattle to sit outside the hearing, but Herald Times reporter and friend of the IDS Chris Korman did a great job blogging outside the conference room this weekend.

REPORT: Tufts signs; UPDATE: Means signs too

9:23 p.m. - Got a press release about Means. He's headed to Billings, Mont., to join the Reds' rookie-league team. I'll link to the release at the bottom of this update, and I'm trying to get in touch with Mr. Means in the next day or so.

NCAA Hearing

Well, after months of investigations, legal documents, coaching changes, late season collapses and mass defections, the Hoosiers will go before the NCAA Hearing on Infractions today.

We get the point, Phegley is an All-American

This really shouldn't be any surprise, but Josh Phegley earned his second All-American honors. Another second team nod, this time by National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association of America. Anyone else looking forward to seeing what he'll do next season?

Crawford to Detroit Mercy?

The Detroit Free Press reported that Jordan Crawford has been seen playing pick-up games at the University of Detroit Mercy gym.

Crawford to transfer from IU

I just got off the phone with JD Campbell, spokesman for the IU basketball team. He gave me a prepared statement from coach Crean informing us that Jordan Crawford will be transferring from IU to another school. "Jordan Crawford and his family informed us today that he will not return to Indiana University," Crean said in a statement. Crean and the team had no further comment Campbell said. This leaves IU with two returning players for next season - senior Kyle Tabor and sophomore walk-on Brett Finkelmeier.

Report: Crawford gone

Hey folks, You're new columnist for next year here, and not with good news. Scout.com has a report that suggests that Jordan Crawford has told staff that he's leaving the program. We'll have more on this as it develops, but I can't say this should come as a surprise to anyone associated with IU basketball.

Surprise phone call from Blake Monar

As I was settling down for lunch just now, my cell rang and it was potential Hoosier, Blake Monar. A pleasant surprise, Monar wanted to fill me in on what happened post getting drafted by the Yankees in the 26th round. "The 26th round doesn't really matter, because I'm not going to get 26th round money," he said.

A litte perspective

They were just encouraging wins earlier this year, but I would imagine Tracy Smith and the Hoosiers feel pretty good now about early-season wins over LSU and Fresno State now that the Bayou Bengals and Bulldogs are in Omaha. The Hoosiers took one each in three total games against each team, though they would argue they should have had two at now-closed and always-tough-on-the-road-team Alex Box Stadium in February. But what do you think?

Sabourin an All-American

The National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association has named Jerrud Sabourin an All-American after his exceptional freshman campaign. Sabourin, who left Arizona after one semester for lack of projected playing time, entrenched himself quickly and firmly into the starting first base position.

Draft Analysis and other such poppycock

As promised. Let's get to work. Andrew Means: Simply put, Means is gone. The Reds told him they had him a bit higher, but one thing to remember is that the First-Year Player Draft is rather different from other professional drafts.

Draft recap

Hey folks, As the simple title suggests, this is indeed a recap of all the happenings that happened in the event that happened to happen yesterday during the 2008 First-Year Player Draft.

6/6/2008 12:24pm

And with the 329th pick...

The Reds drafted Andrew Means with the 329th overall pick, in the 11th round. All speculation at this point, but I'm guessing both Means and Blake Monar, who hasn't been selected yet, will not be going pro. I'm supposed to talk with Means later.

6/5/2008 9:32pm

Day 1 closes and ...

Well that's about it. Niether recruit Blake Monar or center fielder Andrew Means were taken. If I were to guess, this means that Monar will be a Hoosier come fall, as he said yesterday he wanted round 3 money. Means is still up in the air -- again guessing.

Jerry Green speaks

I didn't put this in my marathon Case Summary break down, because I knew that people would likely not read that far down.
