As promised, I return with news for all of you. Practice was dotted with minor celebrities today, including the likes of Micah Johnson, the standout infielder from Park Tudor who committed to IU last fall.
Highly touted junior guard Marquis Teague now isn't likely to make his college choice until July, said his father Shawn Teague. Teague was once expected to decide in April and most recently June, but now the Pike High School star wants to make sure he can take a few more visits. IU, Louisville, Purdue, Ohio State, Cincinnati and Wake Forest remain on his list, while Kentucky has been the most recent program to enter the Teague sweepstakes.
I'll have more from today for you tomorrow. Until then, enjoy this video from the folks at The Palestra.
Updating from the BlackBerry due to lack of wireless, but blogging nonetheless. The Hoosiers will be playing in the Louisville Regional in Louisville next weekend, as many within and without the program had hoped. More to come soon.
Hey folks, The Hoosiers will mass at Yogi's tomorrow to watch the NCAA Selection Show, and I'll be live-blogging from the event if I can get my hands on an Internet card. Until then, to satisfy your frenzied desire for more baseball news, the NCAA has announced regional host sites for next weekend.
Still putting together my final game wrap, but I thought I'd throw a few facts up here for your reading pleasure. --Six Hoosiers -- Jake Dunning, Eric Arnett, Vince Gonzalez, Matt Bashore, Alex Dickerson and Kipp Schutz -- were named to the all-tournament team, and Bashore was the tournament's MVP. --IU's five starters, Bashore, Arnett, Blake Monar and Matt Igel, allowed a combined total of five earned runs through the tournament. --Only twice in the entire tournament did an IU starter not record a hit over the course of an entire game. --The Hoosiers' .414 tournament average is the best in Big Ten history and the only time a team has broken .400 in the Big Ten Tournament. That wrap will be up soon.
Not that I have to tell any of you, but the IU baseball team just finished off a completely dominant week that saw them win four straight games by eight or more runs on the way to their first Big Ten Tournament title in 13 years. Matt Igel pitched five strong innings before giving way to Chris Squires, who shut out Minnesota over the final four frames.
Left-handed freshman Matt Igel will toe the rubber for the Hoosiers tonight, having pitched just 2/3 of an inning last night.
The Gophers just defeated Ohio State 9-6, meaning they will get at least one more crack at the Hoosiers in just a few minutes. Lineups and live blog to come.
By Brian Smith Special to Under The Rock The outrage over Michael Vick's heartless and perhaps even sadistic actions towards animals is almost over.
A 13-3 win did the trick tonight, as Blake Monar tossed 6 2/3 innings of solid work and Tyler Rogers' bases-clearing triple highlighted a seven-run fifth inning that put IU in the driver's seat, a position it would not relinquish. Ohio State struck first with a run in the first and the second, but IU scored three in the fourth before their game-sealing fifth inning. Joey O'Gara and Matt Igel closed out the last 2 1/3 innings. IU took an aggressive approach early in the count, swinging often and chasing Ohio State starter Dean Wolosianski's first pitch more often than not.
IU vs. Ohio State -- Big Ten Tournament
The College Baseball Foundation's inagural Mizuno Pitcher of the Year award watchlist has been narrowed to five names, and Eric Arnett is one of them. Arnett, who's stellar junior campaign has vaulted the Hoosiers into serious Big Ten title contention, is joined by Deck McGuire of Georgia Tech, highly-touted San Diego State fireballer Stephen Strasburg, Arizona State's Mike Leake and A.J.
Here they are. Live blog up in a bit. No. 15, rf, Chris Hervey No. 35, 1b, Jerrud Sabourin No. 16, c, Josh Phegley No.
Thanks for the thoughts on the lineup talk from last night. I read a few things that I would really like to touch on. Cohen is exactly right when he says it's too early to talk lineups, but those types of questions are always present in the media and were brought up in previous posts.
Hey folks, First things first, we will have lineups and the live blog active again tonight for your enjoyment and participation. Now, looking to tonight... There are two possible paths the Hoosiers could take over the next 2-3 days.
After reading through the comments responding to my previous two posts, some want to get the lineup conversation underway. So, who's in and who's out?
As it appears on the IDS Web site... An IU baseball team that two years ago had collectively never seen Big Ten Tournament action is making things look pretty easy so far in this one. After opening the tournament with a 9-1 win over Purdue, the Hoosiers lit up the scoreboard a second time with a 12-3 win against Minnesota, one of just two teams seeded higher than them. Every starter in IU's lineup had a hit, and six had multi-hit games, but left-hander Matt Bashore's performance on the mound meant most of it was just a plus. Following Eric Arnett's stellar outing Wednesday, Bashore made his case for staff ace, pitching seven innings and striking out nine while carrying a no-hitter into the fifth inning.
A press release from the school and a subsequent story in the Reno Gazette-Journal have all the details. Story had intended to move closer to his Los Angeles home with this transfer, Nevada would certainly accomplish that. "Malik is a strong, physical guard who gained a lot of experience at Indiana last year," Nevada coach After sitting out next year, he will really be able to contribute to our program and will be a very good player at Nevada." Story will sit out the year per transfer rules and be eligible for the 2010-2011 season.
