How high can Coover fly?

An article I wrote on senior pole vaulter Jeff Coover was published in the IDS today. Jeff is one of a handful of talented seniors who will leave IU this year (Mollye Beckwith, Coover, Sarah Pease are a few names which initially come to mind). Although it would be unfair to place lofty expectations on these student athletes at this point in their careers, I can't help but think of the enormous potential they have.

Former IU golfer Jeff Overton finishes 2nd on PGA Tour

2005 IU graduate and Evansville, Ind., native Jeff Overton tied his best finish of his PGA Tour career on Sunday when he finished as runner-up at the Zurich Classic of New Orleans. Overton's four day total of 16-under par 272 (67, 69, 70, 66) put him two shots behind the champion Jason Bohn. Bohn and Overton were locked up in a back nine duel on Sunday before Bohn birdied three of his last four holes to take the lead for good. The 2010 season has been an up and down one for Overton with him making only 6 of 11 cuts but the runner-up finish this weekend moved him up to 41st place in the FedEx Cup Standings

Beating the rainstorm - Little 500 recap

A four-peat. A downpour. A broken curse. Looking back on the past two days, I'm not sure there's a better Little 500 weekend to cover but I know as I sit here, finally dry and safe from any rain, wind or lightning that I would surely do it all again. Now that the craze of this weekend's races has settled there are a few things left to say. 1.

Cutters break away, break record with 4th-straight championship

2007. 2008. 2009. 2010. Four straight years the Cutters have crossed the finish line of the men's Little 500 first. Through downpours, thunder and yes, even lightning, the 32 other teams of the 60th running of the men's Little 500 were not able to hold off the Cutters' victory. Prior to the start of the race, officials had said that the race could officially be called after lap 101.

Teter wins Women's Little 500

Teter may never try to win the pole again. Following three years of starting the race from the front at the green flag, the Teter women's team did what it always wanted to do: finish the race in front at the checkered flag. With a power move to separate from the rest of the leaders around lap 80, Teter rode solo in the front for the final 20 laps to win the race by more than 10 seconds. Junior Caitlin Van Kooten, who won every Spring series event, made the race-altering move for the riders and then also rode the final seven laps to win. "Let's attack before they do," Van Kooten said about their team's race strategy. With Teter in commanding lead, a frightening accident on lap 90 slowed the rest of the pack.
