Seven student organizations were placed on cease and desist during the Fall 2025 semester.

Organizations on cease and desist cannot hold social events, recruit or host new member activities, according to university policy.

The IU Office of Student Life temporarily barred all 27 Interfraternity Council fraternities from holding social activities Nov. 14 after several fraternities faced hazing allegations. However, it allowed fraternities in good standing with the university to resume activities Dec. 1

The initial blanket ban drew criticism from free speech by The Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression , which said the prohibition unfairly affected organizations not accused of wrongdoing.

The Office of Student Life defines cease and desist as an interim measure placed upon certain aspects of chapter operations when there is an immediate threat or ongoing investigation, according to its website.

Palestine Solidarity Committee

The Palestine Solidarity Committee was placed on cease and desist Aug. 15 for disorderly conduct, though committee members argue the reasoning for this status is unclear. Following the cease and desist, the organization made an Instagram post announcing it had cut ties with IU and changed its name to the PSC of Bloomington.

The PSC helped organize the pro-Palestinian encampment in April 2024 in Dunn Meadow. The encampment lasted 100 days, and police arrested more than 50 protesters during the first three days.

Alpha Epsilon Pi

Alpha Epsilon Pi fraternity was placed on cease and desist Oct. 24 for three hazing incidents which took place Sept. 20, Oct. 10 and Oct. 12. These incidents resulted in at least three injuries requiring medical attention.

Phi Kappa Psi

Phi Kappa Psi fraternity was placed on cease and desist Oct. 25 for hazing incidents that occurred Oct. 15 and Oct. 16, resulting in two hospitalizations. Phi Kappa Psi was previously ordered to vacate its fraternity house and prohibited from holding meetings from 2015-17 following multiple hazing and drug use allegations.

Beta Chi Theta

Beta Chi Theta fraternity was placed on cease and desist Nov. 4 for hazing, non-compliance with university directives and interference with the university conduct process.

Tau Epsilon Phi

Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity was placed on cease and desist Nov. 14 for hazing. The chapter agreed to a voluntary resolution with the Office of Student Conduct on Nov. 11 to address concerns related to alcohol use and risk management, with the agreement set to remain in effect through Jan. 16, 2026.

Chi Phi

Chi Phi fraternity was placed on cease and desist Nov. 16 for hazing less than a week after all ICF fraternities were barred from hosting social events.

Beta Theta Pi

Beta Theta Pi fraternity was placed on cease and desist Dec. 9 for hazing reported to IU Police Department eight days earlier. This happened two months after the fraternity’s suspension from social activities was lifted by the university.

Hazing is illegal in Indiana and prohibited at IU. The university conducts its own investigations and disciplinary actions, which are handled by the Office of Student Conduct and the Office of the Dean of Students.

IUPD launches criminal investigations for hazing reports and encourages anyone with information to call the department at 812-855-4111 or Crime Stoppers at 317-262-8477.

If you or anyone you know has experienced hazing, you can report it using the anonymous IU Hazing reporting form.
