WIUX, IU’s student radio organization, celebrates its annual pledge drive this week, with the goal to raise $15,000.
The radio broadcasting group manages two local stations: 99.1 FM WIUX.LP Bloomington and B-side Internet radio. WIUX will sponsor student-friendly fundraising events through Saturday to raise money for student radio, which has been a part of campus for more than 50 years.
The week kicked off with the burial of a time capsule Monday evening at the WIUX studio in Franklin Hall. Students selected a variety of personal mementos to be buried, until the capsule is opened 45 years from now by future students.
For those who miss the old school romance that is making someone a mixtape, WIUX has the perfect event. For $5, students can head to the WIUX studio to have their favorite Spotify playlist burned into a CD. They’ll have supplies to decorate the disks before students gift them to their BFF, partner, or themselves. According to WIUX, the best playlists might just hit the airwaves. The Mixtape Mayhem event will be held from 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday in Franklin Hall room 235.
WIUX will host a game of student media-sponsored laser tag on Wednesday. For $8 per game, battle your friends for a good cause (and bragging rights). Laser tag matches will run from 7-9 p.m. Wednesday at LaserLite on East Third Street.
Visit WIUX’s Battle of the Bands on Thursday for live music and friendly competition. Six local music groups will perform, and the audience will vote for the best band of the evening. The winner will open at WIUX’s Culture Shock music festival this spring. Entry is $10, and each vote for a band is $1. Support local musicians and your local radio hosts at 7 p.m. Thursday at The Orbit Room.
The Pledge-A-Thon kicks off Friday, with WIUX broadcasting live for 24 hours straight. Tune in for live music, interviews, local news and exclusive Pledge-A-Thon content. Donations will be accepted online throughout the event, which lasts from 3 p.m. Friday to 3 p.m. Saturday.
