State reports 26 probable West Nile cases

INDIANAPOLIS -- State health officials said Monday they had identified 26 new probable human cases of West Nile virus. This brings the total number of probable or confirmed human cases of the virus in Indiana to 228.

Upon hearing the news of Myles Brand leaving IU for the NCAA, I told my wife we need to start budgeting again for contributions to the University. After approximately each of the 15 to 20 phone solicitations for alumni contributions to IU, I told the caller to not call back until Myles Brand has left his position because I have stopped giving to the University. Each caller has mentioned they hear a lot of such comments.

Legendary opera diva to visit IU

Coming back home to IU

The 44th annual homecoming parade rolled down Third street Friday, bringing with it tradition, pageantry and history. After the colors were displayed by the Army ROTC Color Guard, members of the IU Student Alumni Association, who planned the event, led the way, followed by the IU Marching Hundred.

Women win all 16 events against Evansville

Saturday's swim meet opened with the IU women sweeping the 200 yard medley relay to take the top three places. This event set the tone for the rest of the day as IU went on to win every women's event, sweeping 12 of the 16 events. This led to IU's 185.5 to 103.5 victory over the Evansville Purple Aces.

Hoosiers tame Lions, fall to Wolverines

The IU field hockey team rebounded Sunday with a 3-0 victory over Division III Lindenwood after being shutout 5-0 by No. 2 and defending national champion Michigan Friday. The Hoosiers (4-10, 1-3 Big Ten) were able to outshoot 30-2 and out penalty corner 15-2 the Lions (10-2) after being dominated by the Wolverines' talented attack when IU was outshot 25-4. But coach Amy Robertson said her team can take some positives out of Friday's loss.

Team looks to end season right

The Hoosiers will travel to Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla., to take part in their second ever Mission Inn Classic, which will conclude the fall portion of their schedule. The first half of the year has already produced more titles than all of last year. The Hoosiers have competed in three tournaments so far and have a first, second and third place finish to show for their efforts. Junior Karen Dennison has captured two individual titles, and was the runner-up in the other.

Hoosiers open season, sweep Dayton Fliers

The IU hockey team started the season with a pair of victories this weekend, defeating the University of Dayton Flyers 8-1 Friday and 6-0 Saturday. The Hoosiers struck first Friday when junior forward Frank Harrison backhanded a shot under the stick of Dayton goalie Doug Majkrzak.

Hoosiers' scrimmage a success

For the second week in a row, the IU men's basketball team opened its practice to the public. Not long after the end of the IU football team's loss to Iowa did the fans make the short trek from Memorial Stadium to Assembly Hall to enjoy a sports fan's dream day: A football game followed by an open scrimmage by the NCAA runners-up.

IU claims regular season Big Ten title

The last time IU played at Ohio State, the Buckeyes prematurely ended the Hoosiers' pursuit of a Big Ten Tournament Championship. This time, IU erased the bitter taste of defeat, and earned the number one seed in this year's conference tournament with a 4-2 victory.

Inconsistent offense hurts strategy

If you were to look at the offensive numbers from Saturday's game, IU would appear to be the team that came out on top. But the inability to capitalize in the red zone hurt the Hoosiers as they fell 24-8 to No. 15 Iowa (7-1, 4-0 Big Ten).

Red zone is dead zone for IU

It looked like they could do it again. After spotting No. 15 Iowa a 17-0 first quarter lead, the IU offense moved the ball inside the Hawkeye 20-yard line six times in an attempt to pull out a comeback for the ages. But the six trips into the red zone turned into just three points as IU (3-4, 1-2 Big Ten) dropped its Homecoming game 24-8 to the Hawkeyes (7-1, 3-0 Big Ten).
