Meeting new people for some IU students involves striking up nervous conversations in classes and study groups. For others, it involves talking over drinks at bars and house parties. But now a new Bloomington area Web service, IUMeet.com, looks to serve those without the time for after-hours socialization.

IU has hands full with 2 tough road tests

October 13, 1995, was the last time Wisconsin beat IU. It was also the last time the Hoosiers lost a Big Ten regular season game. This weekend they head up to Madison, Wisc. and Evanston, Ill., looking to extend their 41-game conference undefeated streak. IU (3-3-4, 1-0-1 Big Ten) will battle the Badgers tonight at 7 p.m. and less than 48 hours later will face Northwestern to conclude the weekend trip and three-game conference road swing.

Team wins twice over weekend

The men's soccer team collected a pair of shutouts over the weekend. The Hoosiers toppled Wisconsin 3-0 Friday and defeated Northwestern by the same score Sunday. IU's victory against the Wildcats (5-4-4, 0-2-1) in Evanston, Ill. was IU's third consecutive win. The Hoosiers (5-3-4, 3-0-1) extended their conference undefeated streak to 43 games in regular season play.

Indiana schools plan for new student housing

A new housing plan has been presented to the IU board of trustees to renovate and redesign IU housing over the next 20 years. As of now, IU has met with architects who are working on designs for the initial phase, which will open in fall of 2005, said Pat Conner, Executive Director of Residential Programs and Services.

Hoosiers drop to 2 Michigan schools

The Hoosiers came back home this weekend looking to turn things around after two road losses to Ohio State and Penn State last weekend. This Homecoming weekend, however, would prove to be the end of IU's five-match winning streak in the University Gym as Michigan and Michigan State each were able to capture victories.

Men's golf prepares for fall finish

The men's golf team will tee off in its final tournament of the fall today. The Xavier Invitational will feature 21 teams, the largest field the Hoosiers have played in all season. The Xavier Musketeers played well at the Northern Intercollegiate Sept. 20-21, took first place and forced the Hoosiers to settle for second.

Women's cross country takes second at Auburn Invitational After finishing in 15th place at the Roy Griak Invitational two weeks ago in Minnesota, and the recent injuries to senior Becky Obrecht, and sophomores Jessica Gall and Lindsay Hattendorf, the No. 34 Hoosiers stayed optimistic Friday entering the five-kilometer Auburn Invitational, in Auburn, Ala.

Carolina wins battle of undefeated

Panthers 23, Colts 20 (OT) INDIANAPOLIS -- Carolina found another way to remain unbeaten Sunday. Instead of giving the ball to Stephen Davis and watching him rumble over defenses, they got a 47-yard field goal by John Kasay 5:34 into overtime for a 23-20 victory over the Indianapolis Colts.

Thousands of cream and crimson-clad Hoosier fans, students and alumni took over Bloomington over the weekend to celebrate IU's Homecoming. Despite a disappointing football loss, fans demonstrated their IU pride during a weekend full of tradition. Overtime loss hard to swallow

You had a feeling bad things were going to happen to the Hoosiers when a member of the Marching Hundred was carted off the field before the game started. Then, once Northwestern jumped out to a 17-0 lead in the first quarter, all sorts of questions started flying around. Is IU the worst team in Division I-A? Were these guys listening to Gerry DiNardo when he met with everyone individually last week? Do they have any heart?

Marlins win; series shifts to Chicago

MIAMI -- Josh Beckett and the Florida Marlins put history on hold -- at least for a couple of days. With the Chicago Cubs set to clinch their first World Series trip in 58 years, Beckett buzzed Sammy Sosa in pitching a two-hitter and leading the Marlins to a 4-0 win Sunday in Game 5 of the NL championship series.

Homecoming Heartbreaker

Five hundred and thirty-one yards of offense, four touchdowns and a pair of 130-plus yard rushers weren't enough for IU Saturday. One interception in overtime was plenty for Northwestern. The Wildcats picked off a Matt LoVecchio pass in the end zone in overtime to essentially end the Hoosiers' hopes of a Homecoming win. In a game in which IU rallied from a 17-point second quarter deficit to force the extra period, the team came up short.

Fraternity suspended after pledge hospitalized

IU suspended Pi Kappa Phi fraternity Friday, one week after a 19-year-old sophomore pledge was hospitalized with alcohol poisoning. The suspension prohibits the chapter from participating in any social activities until the investigation is done and the judicial process is completed, said Dean of Students Richard McKaig.

Janitor thwarts theft attempt at music school

Officials suspect an attempted burglar who injured a custodian during a break-in Friday morning may be the same person who stole a student's $20,000 violin from the school. The IU custodian was injured during a scuffle with the would-be burglar inside Merrill Hall, part of the IU School of Music. The suspect was found trying to gain access to a room that, until recently, contained a vault. The vault was moved in light of current security issues.
