Team wins twice over weekend

The men's soccer team collected a pair of shutouts over the weekend. The Hoosiers toppled Wisconsin 3-0 Friday and defeated Northwestern by the same score Sunday. IU's victory against the Wildcats (5-4-4, 0-2-1) in Evanston, Ill. was IU's third consecutive win. \nThe Hoosiers (5-3-4, 3-0-1) extended their conference undefeated streak to 43 games in regular season play.\nJunior forward Ned Grabavoy led the Hoosier scoring charge with a pair of goals against Northwestern. Sophomore midfielder Brian Plotkin launched a shot from near the top of the 18-yard box, but Northwestern sophomore goalkeeper Brian Heckenbach stopped the shot. The Wildcat keeper did not gain control of the ball. As a result, Grabavoy fired a shot off the rebound and buried it in the back of the net for his team-high eighth goal of the season.\n"This was crucial Big Ten weekend for us," IU coach Jerry Yeagley said. "We are finally over .500 and we're making some breaks go our way. We played very good team defense today after a shaky performance both individually and as a team on Friday. Ned had a great performance today."\nIU recorded its second goal against Northwestern in the 35th minute. Grabavoy recorded the score and freshmen forward Kevin Robson was awarded the assist on the play.\nIn addition, Robson tallied the first goal of his career in the 85th minute to give the Hoosiers a 3-0 lead, a lead they would not relinquish. \nMeanwhile, junior goalkeeper Jay Nolly recorded his fourth shutout of the season.\nThe Hoosiers were also victorious against Wisconsin 3-0, Friday in Madison, Wis. \nIn the 19th minute, the Badgers (7-7-0, 1-2-0) leading scorer, junior forward Jed Hohlbein was issued a red card after a tough foul on sophomore defender Drew Moor, forcing Wisconsin to play a man down the rest of the match. \nIU was able to capitalize on the ejection. A little more than ten minutes later, the Hoosiers cashed in with a goal, as sophomore midfielder Pat Yates netted his 2nd goal of the season to give IU a 1-0 lead. \nThe Hoosiers struck again in the first half. Off a free kick, Grabavoy booted the free kick from the right side. As the ball descended toward the goal, freshman defender Julian Dieterle got his foot on it and into the left corner of the goal for his first career goal.\nThe Wisconsin victory marked the first time the Hoosiers have captured back-to-back wins this year and the third time they have scored three goals this season.\nThe Badgers had 12 shots in the game, but IU was able to hold them scoreless. Nolly recorded four saves on Friday to preserve the shutout. \nGrabavoy added the final score for IU against Wisconsin. He tallied his sixth goal of the season in the 79th minute to give the Hoosiers the 3-0 win.\nNext on the slate for the Hoosiers is IUPUI. They will host the Jaguars at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Armstrong Stadium.
