Field Hockey: No. 11 Iowa snaps IU's 10-game win streak in OT

The No. 8 IU field hockey team's winning streak is over. After 10 consecutive wins, the Hoosiers were defeated by No. 11 Iowa 2-1 in overtime. The loss is only the Hoosiers' second of the season, and their first since a Sept. 4 loss at No. 1 Wake Forest. IU's record now stands at 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten. "Iowa played a great game," coach Amy Robertson said. "They contained us defensively and negated our speed."

Prep school standout changes commitment

Armon Bassett is no longer another Indiana high school basketball standout who slipped through IU's fingers. After losing recruiting battles for in-state stars Greg Oden, Josh McRoberts and Luke Zeller, IU coach Mike Davis nearly lost Bassett to Missouri in August. The former Terre Haute South High School standout had verbally committed to the Tigers but changed his mind after attending Hoosier Hysteria earlier this month.

Volleyball: Hoosiers end 7-game losing streak

The IU volleyball team snapped a seven-match losing streak with a five-game victory against Illinois Saturday after failing to regain the Monon Spike -- the traveling trophy between the two teams --against No. 17 Purdue Friday at University Gym.

Women's Soccer: IU puts the 'O' in Hoosier with 3-2 win

Although the IU women's soccer team has struggled offensively this season, it might have found its stride at just the right time. After being shut out Friday against Illinois, the Hoosiers broke out for three goals in a 3-2 victory against Iowa Sunday.

Houston: Texans have a problem

HOUSTON -- The Indianapolis Colts want their fast start to pave the way to a big finish. Peyton Manning was uncharacteristically sloppy at times, fumbled for the first time this season and was intercepted on a poorly thrown pass, but he did enough to lead Indianapolis to a 38-20 victory Sunday against the winless Houston Texans that gave the Colts their first 7-0 record.

What the Buck?

What the buck? What happened? Where were the Hoosiers Saturday afternoon? The offense was dormant, the defense relented and now I have loads of mail coming in from Buckeye Nation declaring themselves the greatest football team in the history of the world. In Friday's column, I dubbed Ohio State the bullies of the Big Ten. And Saturday, they took the Hoosiers' lunch money.

IU loses 13th consecutive game to Ohio State, 41-10

Saturday's version of "The Rock" couldn't have been what IU coach Terry Hoeppner envisioned. Hoeppner and the IU football team were greeted by 52,866 Big Ten football fans Saturday, the sixth largest crowd in IU history, but an estimated 15,000 of those fans weren't clad in cream and crimson, but rather Buckeye scarlet and gray.

The IU offense entered Saturday's game against Ohio State averaging nearly 30 points and 250 passing yards a game. The Buckeye defense came in giving up an average of 15 points and 208 passing yards.

Friday's The Chronicle of Higher Education carried the news that Stanford University has forged a deal with Apple Computers to make lectures, student-produced music and sports commentary available as free downloads via the iTunes Music Store. This follows www.pickaprof.com's move to offer lectures as free downloadable MP3s (Indiana Daily Student, Sept. 29), and Purdue University's announcement that lectures, previously available on library cassettes, will be podcast (The Chronicle of Higher Education, Aug. 31). Not to be outdone, IU is making its iStream lectures available as iTunes podcasts.

Judiciary Democrat says Miers lacks votes now to be confirmed

Category 2 Hurricane Wilma churns toward Florida

KEY WEST, Fla. -- After crawling slowly through the Caribbean for several days, Hurricane Wilma pulled away from Mexico's Yucatan peninsula as a Category 2 storm and, forecasters said, began picking up speed "like a rocket" as it headed toward Florida with expected landfall Monday.

Penguins are my favorite animal. Simply watching them waddle about in their tuxedos invariably causes me to laugh. My love of this animal drove me to see "March of the Penguins." This remarkable documentary details the hardships emperor penguins must endure to procreate in Antarctica, one of the harshest environments on the planet. Whereas my enjoyment of penguins is limited simply to observing them, apparently others on all sides of the political spectrum see more in this marvelous animal than I do.

Daniels to move into official residence after renovations

INDIANAPOLIS -- Gov. Mitch Daniels said Friday that he and his wife Cheri would move into the official governor's residence once major renovations on the home are completed next year. Daniels held his weekly media availability in the three-story house, which is mostly gutted as workers continue a major overhaul that includes new plumbing, wiring, heating and cooling systems and other renovations.

Beer Fest gives breweries chance to market drinks

Beer-drinking enthusiasts sprinted up the escalator, hurriedly grabbed their tasting cups and burst through the doors Friday night at the Bloomington Convention Center with Christmas morning-like smiles. Big Red Liquor's annual Beer Fest had begun. "I've wanted to come since I heard about it," said IU senior Todd Berry, one of the first tasters to run into the room. "It's the chance to try 300 beers, and I'll be damned if I pass it up."

Tailgate crowds remain tame

Civic group membership down 47 percent in 3 years

A recent study published by IU researchers found a decline in the number of members in civic organizations such as veterans groups and fraternal organizations. These groups reported a 47 percent decline in membership between 1999 and 2002, according to the Oct. 19 study. Kirsten Grønbjerg, a professor of nonprofit management in the School of Public and Environmental Affairs and the chair of philanthropy at the Center on Philanthropy at IU-Purdue University at Indianapolis, developed the project six years ago.

UITS warns students of 'Thing from the Internet'

University Information Technology Services enters into the fourth week of the National Cyber Security Month campaign by asking users to beware of "The Thing from the Internet." The invasion of a personal computer can happen through many outlets used by parties attempting to corrupt a computer's data. The most common forms of infection are obtained by clicking links through AOL's Instant Messenger, e-mail attachments or downloads. The dangers of viruses or adware and spyware infections are daily, coming standard with a vast number of possible entryways into your computer system.

IU opera produces another success

"Così Fan Tutte" was such an impressive starter that it gave me high expectations for this opera season, but Friday's performance of Charles Gounod's "Roméo et Juliette" raised those expectations even further. Not only was the opera well-chosen for its excellent music, but every aspect of this performance was well-executed enough to create another world on the stage and draw the viewer into it.

Matt Nathanson in concert tonight

Not many touring acts plan to celebrate their first trip to Bloomington by "Googling" John Mellencamp's private recording studio so they know where to break and enter. Singer/songwriter Matt Nathanson did. "I don't want to steal anything," Nathanson said. "I just want to walk around and play some 'Jack and Diane.' It might be kind of hard to get in though. Do you know any ninjas?"
