Church event rakes in more than $11,000

For the children of Bloomington's First Presbyterian Church, the Heifer Market Sunday meant a chance to pet live geese and baby cows. But for several impoverished families around the world, it will mean the chance to earn a living. The church's 18th annual Heifer Market was a project of Heifer International, a nonprofit organization that seeks to raise money to provide struggling families throughout the world with animals and teach them how to raise and market them in hopes of giving the families a starting point to make a living. Sunday's event raised a total of more than $11,250 toward that goal.

On Oct. 23, the Indiana Daily Student reported that, in the last nonpresidential election, out of 1,281 registered voters in the entirely on-campus Bloomington Five district, only 17 people turned out. Now, the district's large proportion of nonresidents certainly limits the number -- but just 17?

Hoosiers seeking first bowl bid since 1993

With his team just one win away from clinching its first bowl game berth in 13 years, junior fullback Josiah Sears knows IU's focus has changed. "If it hasn't, I think there's something wrong with us," Sears said. "Because we have (a bowl game) within our grasp. We're going to have to screw up to not go now."

Bush back on campaign trail; Kerry in limbo

WASHINGTON -- President George W. Bush headed west to stump for Republican candidates Thursday after reaffirming his confidence that the GOP will maintain control of both the Senate and House in next week's elections. "I don't believe it's over until everybody votes," Bush said Wednesday in an Oval Office interview. "And I believe that people are concerned about the amount of taxes they pay, and I know many people are concerned about whether or not this country is secure against attack."

10-year-old girl dies after rabies infection

A 10-year-old girl who was being treated for the first confirmed case of rabies in Indiana since 1959 has died. Shannon Carroll of Bourbon, Ind., died Thursday morning at Riley Hospital for Children in Indianapolis hospital spokeswoman Jo Ann Klooz said. Carroll was hospitalized in early October after being bitten in June by a rabid bat, health officials said. More than 30 relatives, friends and classmates of the girl were offered injections to prevent the spread of the disease.

Missing Indiana girl found dead in Cass County

A man paroled in March after serving more than 26 years for killing a Kansas boy was expected to be charged with murder in the death of a 16-year-old northern Indiana girl, a prosecutor said Thursday. Investigators found the body of Stephanie Wagner in a northwestern Cass County field Wednesday night. The suspect in her death, Danny R. Rouse, 51, a dishwasher at the same restaurant where she worked, told them where to look and confessed to killing her, police said. An autopsy was scheduled for Thursday.

Warrant issued for local tanning salon owner after girl complains

The Bloomington Police Department issued a warrant Thursday for a local tanning salon owner for inappropriate contact with juvenile females. Jeffrey Lewis Wright, 49, is a convicted sex offender and owner of Spring Break Tanning, 820 W. 17th St. Wright was arrested Oct. 16 during a traffic stop on warrant for voyeurism. The warrant was the result of a complaint Aug. 24 by a female employee at his tanning salon, said BPD Detective Sgt. David Drake, reading from a probable cause affidavit.

Long-time residents of Monroe County vie for seat on Council

With Trent Jones' County Council seat up for grabs in the 2006 election, two candidates are vying for his spot. Republican Jim Billingsley is running for County Council in District 2 this year. Billingsley has been a Bloomington resident since he was an infant and has been interested in politics for some time. He ran for state legislator, unsuccessfully, in 2002.

Long-time residents of Monroe County vie for seat on Council

Long-time Monroe County resident Charles Newmann is running on the Democratic ticket for District 2 county council. A 1969 graduate of IU, he holds a Bachelor's degree in Zoology. He then went on to serve in the Army for 28 years, retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel. He's since been involved in local government, first in 1999 when he was appointed to the board of zoning appeals, and then to the land use planning commission.

IU senior takes on 6-year incumbent in House race

Matt Pierce feels the Indiana General Assembly has lost its way. Since his election to the State Representative for District 61 seat in 2000, his main goal has been to help get the state on the right track, reversing some of the bad decisions he said they made. "One of the problems is the representative leaders in the General Assembly are not asserting themselves as an independent branch," Pierce said. "They've pretty much become a rubber stamp for Gov. Mitch Daniels." Pierce said it is important for the legislature to ask hard questions, in response to the proposals of the governor.
